Unhappy fc falling apart

Hey, new fellow rotorhead here, I bought a 88 gxl with 180,000 miles on it (doubltfully ever rebuilt, but ran good for a while until things began breaking)

1) Doesn't have any oil pressure at startup
2) The water pump is leaking bad
3) The idle is rediculously high, ~4000 rpm give or take a thousand

Water pump and gasket coming in tomorrow, but I'm completely stumped on the idle problem. I don't know alot about the oiling metering system so I was hoping someone could shed some light on what is likely break first

A while back someone "borrowed" my hks intake (came with the car) so I had to fab one out of a couple of socks , a few days ago it disapeared. Hopefully it fell off and didn't get sucked in (doublfull, but who knows), but I think that's when my idle went crazy. I was able to get the filter back, btw. Before I tear everything apart, I want to hear some opinions.

I've done a good amount of searching but i'm still unsatisfied so I'm hoping you guys can help me out, thanks alot this a great site

Are you sure your throttle cable isn't sticking, which would cause such a high idle? Mine idled around 3k until I bought a new cable. I hope that sock didn't get sucked in.

#1 Replace or space up the E-shaft themo-valve to get your oil pressure back to normal. Make sure you are not using a Fram or other cheapo oil filter.

#2 Replace water pump, and thermostat (Mazda OEM thermostat only)

#3 Reset timing and idle, and check for vac leaks for the high idle.

Thanks, but how do I reset the timing and idle?

And I have checked the throttle cable and there is slack, but I still can't hold good idle when pushing the throttle shut

I run 20w50 and it's a purolator filter

The eshaft thermo valve is very curious to me, I'll have to find it

Also, make sure your oil pressure reading isn't just a bad sender... verify your oil pressure suspicions with a manual type oil pressure gauge.

Also... a sock? Have you made sure it didn't get sucked in there? It would have gotten stopped by the AFM I'd imagine... perhaps lodged it open? what made you think using a sock was okay? I'd run it wide open before putting something like that on it.
