FC as DD in winter
hey all,
for those who use their car as a daily driver and experience winter (you folks on the west coast are lucky i suppose). are there any tips for starting / getting the car warm and driving about?
basically my normal morning is start the car in gear and let it idle for 3-5 minutes. i don't have a cat to warm so the cold start doesn't really apply. it usually takes me a couple minutes to get situated and then i'm off. i drive pretty slow in my neighborhood on the way out to the secondary streets shifting at 2k. once i'm on the streets, i need to go through 2 lights and a bunch of turns to get to the highway. by the time i'm on the highway, the temp needle is moving past the dead space after C.
this morning was the first "cold" day for me and i've never had a 7 in the winter .. since i've never had a 7 =P. i figure since it's cold, i'll let it warm up a little longer. since the air is cold, there's basically a smoke screen large enough to hide my house. of course since it's cold all the belts are whining, the car is shaking, the exhaust is pumping so there's white smoke everywhere, the tranny is audible, the shifter is like trying to move a spoon stabbed in icecream. i let the car warm up for about 10-15minutes (scrapping the ice off windshield and driveway) and decided to drive. i drive slow out of my neighborhood and all i see is blue. get out to the highway .. more blue ..it's constant blue. i think a couple people had to move lanes because they couldn't see. i think once i started moving (70mph) and heading to work that it stopped.
your thoughts? normal winter startup experience? suggestions?
thanks.
my first winter with a 7 - yay go me.

Just make sure you dont nail it with the car cold. It takes longer to warm up.

Your right, it was cold this morning. We had 8 in Central Jersey. The cold really takes it toll on vehicles. As stated, start it in first so high revs don't occur, then to neutral and just let it warm up and take it easy. Red Line in trans makes it a little easier. Takes a while for everything to get up to temp, and with no cat, you'll see the oil smoke easily.
