FC Catalytic Converters?
So I was thinking, since my catalytic converter is likely the original units, that I'd like to replace them. Now my situation is that I'm in the military, but I'm in California, so I know most of the basic rules, like you can't even buy your own cats and install them, something to that nature. So I figured I'd buy my own and have them sent to my parents and have them send them to me.
So here's the question, what can I get to replace my old cats that will be the most likely to pass visual inspection?
I was thinking bonez dual cat, it looks kinda stock and will get me more performance, either that or I get the magnaflow ones, but I don't know what part numbers I need for those. Also this is an FC vert.
Mainly doing this for preventative maintenance and a performance gain.

well I don't think you're going to easily replace the precats. Those help you pass emissions when the main cat isn't up to operating temperature. You can get a precat delete pipe. Also make sure your air injection system is working properly (ACV).
For an aftermarket cat, remember that metallic substrate cats flow more but they make it harder to pass emissions. I actually did a full post on this in another thread.

http://srmotorsports.com/sr86xhst.html I don't know if I'm helping you much but I thought I would just throw this out. This high flow cat has the ability to add 9 hp.

I don't have any info for you on California laws, but I can tell you I had the single Bonez cat on my previous S5 NA with a mild street port. It lasted about 5 years/35,000 miles before it would no longer pass emissions. I guess that's decent for an aftermarket cat.

Any after market converter will work well as long as the car is in tune and the emission equipment is operating properly. How long they last is also contributed to this also. A engine running excessively rich and or burning a lot of oil will also destroy a catalytic converter in a short time.
Ca has just gotten nuts as to what you can put on your car.
Some after market ones that "Meet" Ca standards-

1 RB downpipe and a gutted cat would work best. You still get backpressure needed for the s4. You'll need to buy a used stock cat and gut it. Maybe gut the precats and find a way to make a tube that RB makes for backpressure.
2 Leave the stock system alone(In the garage) and put back on when needed to smog

You could just have 2 diffrent systems.

The bonez cat will be a hit or miss in california. Depending on the person running your inspection, they can say it looks aftermarket and ask for the C.A.R.B number, which bonez doesn't have. Some may not car as long as your care passes the tailpipe test.
The magnaflow units are CA legal if you get the O.E. replacement style one.

Another option which is more expensive than the Magnaflows posted by RX-7Doctor is Random Technology. They claim that their cats have passed California ARB standards. I had one on my old '90 NA and it seemed to have the same flow characteristics as the Bonez. They also offer both ceramic and stainless substrate versions. They seem really well-made too. You might want to call their customer service to discuss their CARB status:

I passed the relative rigorous Maryland emissions with flying colors using the Random Technology single cat and a downpipe in place of the pre-cats (which of course would not be an option for you in CA).

It shows it right there in the link?
I would not bother with the pre-cats as I have never had to replace those.

Ok, did a little more research on this stuff. What should I do with the 2 precats? Since I technically want to stay smog legal. I could go about this a few ways.
1. Gut the 2 precats.
2. Replace the precats with a straight pipe or presilencer sort of thing.
3. Replace the precats with a magnaflow unit which apparently removes my 2 for the single magnaflow unit.
What would you do, if you were in california? I know that the precats don't do anything really after the main cat is warmed up. As far as I've heard.
