hmm, initially I was gonna pass (these events get real lame, real fast) but now I see Yoshinori Koguchi will be there and hes been a long time favorite for a while so I may end up going. With "1000's" in attendence though, I doubt I'll get to talk to him. Guess we'll have to see, im not too into "drifting" for show.

Not only are 3 guys gonna be there, but their cars will be there as well! Also, the $150 clinic will have pointers by those 3 pros while the $40 doesn't. Too bad I can only afford $40

Bah

Youd just be paying an extra $110 to have them tell you the same thing the other people would tell you.

You need pro tips to drift a front wheel drive.
Drifting a RWD is easy - step on the gas & steer like crazy..

I think you mean lift off the gas and stear like crazy. IMO power sliding is not drifting, it's power sliding. Wish I could make it, but I live in Michigan.

I would think they know a little better since they are at the level they are at...

Yea, I don't consider power-sliding as drifting either. Power-sliding takes very little skill to do, as SureShot said, it's easy. But It does take skill to keep such a long drift goin 90-100 mph.

Ive seen quite a few drifting competitions but never one where they drifted at "90-100"mph. I think this is a common misconception.

Well maybe not the typical amateur drifter in Japan, but almost all professional D1 drivers will carry close to that much speed coming into a drift. Many of the faster turns those drivers are able to drift them at the top of 3rd gear. However, the techniques they use are definately not what you want to try and practice on with your daily driver

You don't have to be going 90+ mph to get trailing throtle overstreer. I can get my RX-7 into a preatty good drift at about 60mph on an on ramp near my house. If the turn were tighter, I wouldn't even have to go that fast. I could drift my 95hp Fiat X/19 all day long, it was very easy. Trail brake a little to deep, turn in with your foot off the gas, and get ready to counter steer. You apply throttle when you want the car to stop sliding. That's drifting as I know it. Even a well setup FWD car will oversteer when driven "properly" at it's limit.

I have never been to a drifting event so I don't know what kind of speeds are common, or what technique is used. I just assumed the "classic" way of getting oversteer was used. Hopefully I will make it to one somday. From what videos I have seen, the guys snap the hand brake, then once the car rotates, put your foot in it, and power oversteer. Is this right? I do however road race, I have a compitition licence, and drive a real race car. On a race track I can drift with the best of them. I know it's slow, but I just can't resist the occosional drift.

Many "ricer drifters" think that flooring a rwd car around a 90 degree corner in first gear is "drifting" that's what I call power sliding, and have a hard time accepting.

I haven't seen the speedo's themselves, since most Option videos don't focus on the speedo if at all. But previously, on Dave SlideSquad's sight (www.davescholz.com), he had a bunch of videos he took when he went to Japan. Well after downloading pretty much all his videos, I met him at a Club4ag meet and I asked him several questions about those Japanese guys. He confirmed with me that they indeed were going that fast (~90 mph).

BTW, I'm heading to Japan this summer, so I'll have a video collection to remember of my own

Edit: Oh yea, where abouts in So Cali are you? I'm over in South Pasadena

I'm definitely going to be there. Got a free ticket to go so can't let that go to waste. If even if I didn't get a ticket for free I'd still go. I hope I see more Rx7's out there. Geez, I hope I can get a video camera this time!!

Drift is the new rice unfortunately and theres nothing we can do about it I doubt 1000s of people will be there but I wouldnt be surprised if it fills up with the import showoff crowd.

We need to hype up drag racing again so people leave the canyons and "drift events" alone and go back to straight line driving.

ps.
SlideSquad sucks. Have you ever seen them in action? Theyre the Understeer Kings.

haha whats up Wan? I havent seen you on these forums for a while. I see your predications for the event as highly probable I try to fight it in my own way by staying away from their "drift" scene.

Infini IV- I purchased my car in Pasadena Im in Orange County in the Laguna Niguel/Aliso Viejo area.

If either of you two are up for it, next saturday we're (local FC drivers) holding our own little "togue" run. We're about 3-5 FC's that usually practice around here with some other cars that tend to come along. If you're intrested let me know and we can meet up.

Drifts can be initiated at a speed of 90+mph...

Drift is only the new hit trend because of all people like you who watch too much Initial D and then go ahead and name their car the White Comet...

Don't hate it cuz you can't do it...

Oh and what the heck is a toyota chaser anyway?

A Toyota Chaser is kinda the same size as a Toyota Avalon, but in a RWD platform combined with the 2jzgte of the MKIV Supra. It has a very good front - rear balance (kinda like the Nissan Laurel), and doesn't weigh that much, which makes it a slightly popular drift machine .

Id like to see someone not spin or crash when intiating a drift at over 90mph.

So drift is the new hit trend because of people like me who
A) Dont drift
B) Dislike drifting to a degree
C) Get bitched at by drift fanatics like you for not embracing drifting.

Thats interesting

At the last drift event held by club4ag there was a civic "drifting". I was too lazy to walk over and check this person out because it was either walk across the parking lot to see this civic OR sit there and eat some delicious chex mix. Tough choice. We'll see how this event turns out.

Nismo... I havent touched a canyon since a certain road got closed down for maintenance. Just out of curiosity, where do you guys run at?

see here's the thing. saying "initiating a drift at over 90mph" is deceiving. around most turns it won't be anywheres near that fast. the 90mph turns that involve drifting will be those long sweeping turns at the end of straightaways where the turn can normally be taken that fast, except the tires will be sliding instead of grabbing. you're not gonna get a car to drift a turn at twice the normal speed on the optimal line, physics will slap you in the face, and so will the wall. so there may be high speed drifts, they just will replace the high speed turns.
