Arrow factory electric fan /overheating

Ok heres the deal , got 2 different questions.

Firts fo al my cluster doesnt work so until my new one arrives I have no temp gauge. I also have no overflow nipple (wrong rad cap neck). Am i correct in believing that if the car over heats coolant will spray from the hose/rad fitment as it did before? Is there any other way of telling. Im driving short distances and the rad is hot but will not burn my hand after each trip.

Also when is the factory electric fan (optional) supposed to come on? The only time I have seen/heard it come on is when i remove the egi fuse. Will it work if my cluster has no temp reading?

Um, all rx-7s came with clutch fans from the factory. Your efan must be aftermarket.

There are suplimental small electric fans on some models (usually GXL's with auto trannys and some turbos).

This supplimental fan is in addition to the mechanical clutch fan.

Don't post if you don't know.

It should be on when the coolant temp exceeds 210, and when the air conditioning is on.

i have a quick question about that electric efan on my gxl. when i turn on my a/c and the car is idling the temp will go up to 1/2 and almost 3/4 (on hotter days) on the factory temp gauge, then when i drive the temp will go back down to normal. the fan never kicks on. why is this? what causes the temperature to rise like that at idle.

The heat being discharged by the condenser is drawn through the radiator causing the cooling system temp to rise. Not certain as to where the relay is for the electric fan, but you should find and correct as it will help the a/c system also, by drawing the heat from the condenser and keep a high air flow through both units.

is it normal for the temps to rise that much though especially on hot days. could it be the condenser is bad?
i have a year old koyo radiator and a brand new clutch on my stock fan, the temp never goes over 1/4 until i cut the a/c on.
This cant be normal.
on my 87 celica when i turn the a/c on the temp is unaffected.

thanks

sorry for hijacking the thread

I edited my post right after you posted icemark. As stated i have a year old koyo radiator, and i have flushed the system twice since installing it. also I put in a brand new water pump and thermostat, which i think I think was a stant thermostat, i bought it at the local auto parts store. could it be the thermostat?

I would get the fan fixed first. If you're driving the car and the temp drops, that's an indication that there is not enough air flow across the radiator at idle. If cooling system was at capacity, the temp would not drop as you start moving. Make certain the clutch fan is working also. There is a lot of heat expelled when the a/c is operating and you need all parts working as they should.

ok, i'll do more troubleshooting on the cooling system.

for the stock efan it works when 12v are applied to it but never kicks on with the a/c. could i just wire a new relay through the compressor wire (the one wire that plugs into the compressor)?

thanks for all the help guys

So if my fan isnt comign on its safe to say that it isnt overheating??????

Ok I have a question.. not to re-hash an old thread..

but on my 87TII with the factory (as far as I can tell) e-fan in front of the rad, it comes on when I turn on the car, and stays on.

Any ideas why? or what I should check?
THanks!

The wire might be off the water temp switch on the thermostat housing. THAT will make the fan come on.

There's also a 7.5 amp fuse that if broken, will cause the fan to come on anytime the key is turned to ON or better. See the schematics in section Bc of the 87fsm. If that fuse is busted the electrical fan relay Bc-02 relaxes and provides a ground to the fan which already has 12vdc coming to it. Walla, fan runs with key to just ON.

The water temp switch makes a ground circuit when the temp of the water is below 207 degrees.

Pull the single connector off the water temp switch on the thermostat housing and with the key to ON, the fan should come on. If it does...that's good. Does your fan come on when your WORKING airconditioner is turned to ON??????????????

I notice that according to the diagram, some cars WITHOUT airconditioning came with an electric fan . It seems to me those fans come on when the water temp is over 207 degrees OR the plug is removed from ITS water temp switch.

Pull the connector off the water temp switch that is dedicated to the aux fan. The fan should come on. Did it? Got 12vdc on one of the two sockets on the fan motor connector when the key is to ON?? Got a fan relay? A fan sub-relay also?
