Factory and after market alarm question

Recently bought a 1990 convertible RX-7....only 36,000 miles.

Been reading alot on this forum and decided to put in a kill switch and a alarm system.

Here's the kill switch I wanted to have put in.....http://www.aboutsecurityconcepts.com...loctronics.htm

and I was going to put in a basic alarm with shock and window sensors just to deter the teenage idiots. My goal is to prevent/deter as much as possible my entire car being stolen....which is why I want the fancier kill switch instead of the one that comes with an alarm system.

The car comes with the factory security system. I've read the owner's manual that came with the car...but it really doesn't say what it does? Kills the starter? ejects the driver's side seat through the roof or what? I've looked on the internet and can't find any info on how good this factory system is..... I was trying to make it go off and couldn't. Does anyone have any info on this?

I was wondering...is this factory system any good or should I go ahead and put the loctronic's kill switch in there with a basic alarm package?

Thanks in advance.

You sure it's arming? The easiest way to make it go off is first roll your window down, arm the alarm, and reach in and unlock the door from the inside. Pulling the hood release works too. The horn should sound, and make it impossible to start the car (assuming everything associated with it still works) until you disarm it by putting the key in either door and turning it. Putting it in the ignition will NOT disarm it.

As far as how good it is? I dunno, the flashing light in the center console would deter me if I were going to steal a car. It gets the job done, and does the basics of what you really want. It's not going to keep someone from breaking the glass, climbing through the window, and stealing everything in there

Thanks.....I'll try that tomorrow and report back. I never knew how to make it go off.

There's no flashing red light anywhere....there's just a symbol of a car with a key in the middle of it with the word "security" above or below it (I forget) in the console that display's all the lights. It goes out after 10 seconds or so after it's armed. According to the car manual it's suppose to.

I will check to see if it goes off tomorrow.

My main question was...would that starter disable relay be better at slowing down someone than the factory security system they have on it. I've read that some factory kill switches are easily by passed in a matter of a few seconds....I wasn't sure if this one installed in mine is an easy one to re-wire to hot wire it or not.

just hide a fuel cut-off switch somewhere that no one would look. Like in my vert i have it under the wind guard that is always down anyways so its tucked up under there. Then instead of risking your head unit and all other stuff they may steal from inside pay the extra few dollars to the insurance company for any aftermarket goodies. Mine covers all aftermarket parts up to $5000 for now when i get new rims and do a turbo swap i will raise it. It makes for a nice piece of mind considering an alarm is ignored by 99.9% of people anyways. Sure they worked at first but even personally if i hear an alarm going off i just dont even pay attention to it.

Even worse is mine is a vert so if they want it that bad then they will slit the top or break a window so if they want it take it cuz its all covered.

just take the engine with you everywhere you go, its small enough...

I say this often, but an alarm will only keep honest people honest, if a thief wants your car they will get it, with a tow truck, with a cargo strap and a pickup.. you name it, if they want it its thiers...

all you can do is HOPE that your alarm deters them enough, get one of those SST alarms with 1 mile range, they work well as far as notifying you of problems, they will tell you if it is door, hood, trunk, glass, ignition, and with optional sensors it will tell you motion (since you have a vert get that in case they tear top and go in for the kill )

after you install that, like the other guy said, a kill switch, I would recommend putting it somewhere unnoticeable but stealthy.
IE you don't have to reach for it when you start the car, something like when you put your seat belt on you flick it, or like a friend of mine he had an old chevy van with a pushbutton near the APillar, he always had his hand up there anyway so it was a perfect spot, I rode with him daily for a year and never knew till he asked me to move it... 5 min later I come back thinking I broke his van LOL

other than that, you will get the same answers from everyone around you, park in a garage, secure lots etc etc, but no matter what if someone wants it, well buh bye rx

but I wouldn't waste 50 bucks on that key thing, the alarm will virtually do the same thing, that would probably be easy to disable also
