External Fuel Pump with original fuel pick up

Hello all,

(Long story, so I'm sorry and be warned!)

After looking at various options and threads online, I am still on the fence on how to tackle my issue with my fuel pump. Right now, my FC T2 has an external fuel pump from the previous owner. Instead of welding on an external sump kit to allow gravity feed into the pump, he opted to use the original feed lines on top of the gas tank to feed the pump that's installed next to the bottom of the tank. In order for fuel to reach the pump, the pump has to suck fuel UP the original in-tank fuel pump assembly (PO had a custom pick up assembly to allow fuel pick up from the sump inside the OEM tank!) before the fuel exits the tank and flow through the fuel line and into the pump for pushing toward the engine bay.

The pick up method is obviously the complete opposite of what most external fuel pump manufacturers suggest, as this pulling of fuel is not what electric pumps are truly made for, even though it's still possible. So, I believe this questionable fuel pick up method is what's leading to the pump cultivating/vapor locking after 30+ of regular driving (street or highway). Keep in mind...the pump is not running full duty at all time to cause any overheating issues. But, vapor locking can reduce cooling of the pump significantly, leading to the same end result of overheating and not enough fuel delivery.

My known options right now are 1) to reinstall an in-tank fuel pump and ditch the external pump entirely, or 2) install an external sump kit and reroute fuel feed line from the sump straight to the external pump. Personally, I want to keep the external pump (it looks cool!), but the options I know of don't really support that preference, unless I start drilling and welding.

So, what other options are there that you know of? I have had suggestions to run a second in-line pump to help with pushing fuel out of the tank, similar to fuel cell setups. But, that sounds like adding another thing to fail in the car. I want the car to stay street friendly, so no fuel cell or surge tank. As much as I know an in-tank pump would probably fix the issue, I do like to have the external pump since I can HEAR the pump rattle and whine as it either stays functional or about to go (i.e. I don't want to discover a fuel pump failure through a blown engine).

Any suggestion or advice would be appreciated! Thanks for reading!

you dont specify what your power levels are, if you are under 300hp and not running e85 just put a intank pump. you will hear it running

install in tank pump to assist your existing pump
ditch external pump and run in tank pump
remove tank and weld sump and keep existing external pump

My butt dyno estimates about 250-300whp at 14psi boost, but I want to start pushing the streetported 13B with more boost once I can confirm a steady fuel delivery system. Between the existing tune and upgraded parts, I believe that should be possible without blowing anything up.

At that power level Your in tank choices are endless, simplify things and ditch the external pump.

+1, go back to stock stuff with whatever fuel pump floats your boat.

back in my day the walbro was the easy button, although i think i'd run a supra pump now, just because its an ND, so its stock
