Exhaust Rubber Hangers

How can I get the hanger's off/on, and can I use any exhaust hanger as a replacement? (had to cut through one and another was broken from heat and wear/tear).

That rubber just doesn't move easily.

just cut the old one off and get new ones at any auto parts store. THey are all universal (doughnuts)..just lift the exaust with your hands and it should come off pretty easy..

I used a prybar and didn't have any problems getting them to move.

Uh, you know you can take off the metal hangers off the CHASSIS but unbolting them, right?

hmmm...

Actually for the rear end of the exhaust you can't, the 2 on each muffler closest to the rear are welded to the chassis, not bolted like all the other ones. (The other ones were easy, it was the mufflers that were a pain in the rear.

EDIT: Maybe its just us wierd Canucks.

I put a wire thru the doughnut and then pushed the muffler over with my foot while pulling on the wire to get them on and off.

I tried that...the wire broke.
I usually have someone push up on the muffler (or put a jack under there if no one is around) while I use a big pry bar to strech it out. The little towing ring thing is good to use as a fulcrum when prying the drivers side one off, don't remember about the passenger side. Those donuts are the biggest pain to get off (and on for that matter), I've had to do it 4 times!

hmmm...

Maybe if you use a bigger gauge of wire (like a 12 or even a 2 (if all else fails try 1 gauge wire.)

A piece of quarter inch dia rope with a loop on one end. Put your foot thru the loop, the other end tied to the doughnut. Push with the foot while manipulating the doughnut off.

I boiled the hanger to make it softer, then used a 12 inch screwdriver, and used it like a pry bar. It took me 30 minutes the first time, now I can swap out my entire exhaust (header back) in about 30 minutes.

I ate spinach and used me muskles! Thank God I have a single exhaust—pissed me right off getting those donuts back on the muffler section. I feel your pain.

I use a dose of lubricant to get them to slide off.&nbsp It's a pain initially when you first wrestle with them, but you figure how to finesse it later...

Change that...oils get really messy.
Try dishwashing detergent - get those mounts clean at the same time!

Exclamation

They sell these long hooks with a handle on ther end so you can really stretch the **** out of those donut things, by using your entire body weight. The higher the car the better so you can really get your weight into it. An oil pit would work. (like at Jiffy Lube or something like that)

I was messing with mine so much I think I bent one of the brackets and now one of my RB mufflers hangs like 1/2" lower than the other. Not very noticable to others but it bugs me.

Dude... that is just brilliant! All this time I wrestled with them with prybars and special expensive pliers that supposedly take them off easily but don't.

Other than that, it really helps if you liberally spray 'em down with penetrating oil and work it in there (work the hanger back and forth on the stud).
