Exhaust Reconmendations 88 N/a VErt

As the title says. I am looking into getting a new exhaust set up. I have stock original exhaust on the vert right now and believe that at least one of my cats is clogged. Would like to go with something aftermarket...been thinking Racing Beat Cat Back..not too sure though..... I dont want it to be all that loud at all.....
give me some set up options/opinions....
thanks

If you don't want it loud, then racing beat is a good idea. But honestly I think the RB system is overpriced and overrated and a custom exhaust from an exhaust shop can be made for cheaper and just as good.

I have the RB catback, down pipe, and pre-silencer on my 88 N/A Vert. It is just loud enough when you are getting on the gas and it quiets up when you are just holding your speed.

I have 2.25" mandrel bent custom exhaust with 2 Supertrapp muflers on my 89 NA. I can adjust the noise and back presure by adding or removing the difuser discs.

What exactly do you want to know? I just have my opinion about the RB system and that it's overpriced for what it does. A custom exhaust made at an exhaust shop can be just as effective for a lot cheaper.

I had my my catback made at a shop with dual ebay mufflers and 2.5" piping all welded up and installed for $150. I'll be glad to answer any other questions you have, just let me know.

I have the RB RoadRace Full exhaust. It's expensive. It's beautiful. It is quiet when U want it & sounds great when U get on it. I'm not sure, but I think the vert needs a slightly different pipe bend than my '88 SE. I'm sure U could get something cheaper...but why bother? Do it once do it right is my moto. LOL my dad went halfway with it...RB header, a"catalyzer" & old midas cans. It sounded REALLY LOUD & metallic like angry bees. I just said screw all the dickin' around & bought the Full system & hanger set & gasket & K&N & a ACV plate. I just want to whack off when I see those Phat cans hangin' down!!! Makes the rest of the car look bad.

dDub,

With out looking under the car cause its out on the street tonight.....Doesn't the Cat have that little back pressure pipe on it?? How did you get that on a regular Cat??? Or am I thinking of the wrong placement. And did the shop have "Y" pipes?? did you repalce all that or did you just use the stock pipes after the Cat? SSEEe? pretend I don't know anything about building an exhaust....which I don't

I used a Bonez high flow cat that comes with a nipple for the back pressure/split air pipe. The exhaust shop was able to make this pipe for me too. However since then I've removed my cat and all emissions and run a borla XR-1 in place of the cat and only put the bonez back in for emissions testing.

Yes the exhaust shop had y-pipes. All exhaust shops will have a way to make one, it's very common. Or h-pipes, x-pipes, etc., whatever the car may need. I have an RB header to the borla xr-1 and then everything after that is a custom 2.5" y-pipe and catback.

Hope that helped.

Im pondering the same idea on my 88 vert. How would the car sound if i gutted teh cats and left the stock exhaust on it? I dont want it to sound like a bee but i want a little more power out of it. Cost is definately an issue. Also so i can remove all the emissions junk. Thanks, i was going to post my own thread but i figured this covered the exact same thing.

I went with a Bonez downpipe & presiliencer and kept the stock cat-back. Sounds quiet at idle, and a little more "ballsy" when you tap the throttle. Not loud at all, and the power increase is definately noticable. Not as nice as a full RB setup, but good bang for the buck.

Where are you getting 1400 installed from!? If you're talking just the catback like you keep quoting, the RB catback is $576, shipping and install (even if you have a shop install the exhaust for you) won't amount to $800+.

I honestly can't see paying so much for just a catback, $576. Granted it is a mild/quiet system, but you can do the same with other mufflers and a custom system. I paid $80 after shipping for both my mufflers, and $150 to make/install my custom catback. I honestly believe that with the RB exhaust you're mostly just paying for the name.

Wheres the best place to buy this as far as price is concerned? Did you ditch all the emissions junk once u did this?

I bought full RB (header/pre-silencer/catback) for my 88 vert and am satisfied with them but now I think about $600 for just catback is too much. It's not so loud (compared with other loud cars) but it is significantly louder than stock. You'd better stay away from header if you like quiet exhaust.

I got it through Mazsport (mazsport.net) and yes, I did ditch all emissions except for the airpump, which was retained only to make the exhaust more bearable to breathe for my wife (convertible, but I actually liked the smell )

They also did the install, which involved a little trickery to keep my aux ports working properly.

I have a RB downpipe w/ no cats, and an HKS back end. Its very low pitched and reasonably quiet at cruise, kinda loud at WOT. about $1150 total plus $40 for a local muffler shop to install for me. I am very satisfied with it. Indiana has no vehicle inspections.

If you're going to spend over $1,000 for a full exhaust. Get the Mazdatrix True Duals and install it yourself. In the end you'll know a little bit more about the car and save some $$.
