Exhaust Question

I drive a s4 n/a. At this point, my mufflers are both dead. It is far too loud.

*note* for anyone who is going to respond, you should note that part of my exhaust is not stock. I think the y-pipe is not original for the car, and I don't believe the pipe back from the exhaust manifold is either. I do not have a catalytic converter, but believe I do have a resonator. I am not certain whether I need to do a full exhaust system or not. The mufflers are supposedly what would have originally come on the car.

My car is a dd, and about 80% of the time I spend in it is on the 100 mile drive between home and college. Therefore, I need the car to be reasonably quiet around 3k rpm for that long drive. That's my biggest concern.

Also, I like going fast and revving a little high. I have read threads before talking about the 5th and 6th ports opening. If I go to a larger exhaust (say 2.25 or 2.5 inches) will I need to be concerned with whether or not all the ports on my engine open during spirited driving?

If it turns out that all I need is a pair of mufflers, does anyone have a suggestion for a muffler that is simultaneously inexpensive, quiet, and still has a deep resonant tone?

Thank you in advance. I don't know the most about this car, and am still in the process of learning the ins and outs of the 7. Your help is much appreciated by this FC newbie.

Okay, I hate to be rude, but....

Any suggestions that don't involve me spending $1000?

There are a couple local shops that talked about fabricating a full exhaust for me for $400-$500. The quality of the tone isn't terribly important. The order of importance for me is as follows:
1. quiet
2. inexpensive
3. sounds bad-***

Fab an exhaust for $500 thats probably going to be about like stock, or spend ~$800 for the best quality exhaust you can get. best sound, great power and very well made.

call racing beat they have some universial stainless packed mufflers for 95 - 100 each and they last really long and sound good, and if that dosent make the tone deep enough for you than install a prescliencer. as the 5th and 6th port acuators i i would do the msd rpm switch with the lumbar air pump trick. theirs a write up some where.

any exhaust a shop fabs up for an rx7 will not last because of the heat the rotary creates

fc3sna, I tried to look up "msd rpm switch lumbar air pump", and the only forum that came up was this. Might there have been a typo in what you said?

Does anyone know how to make sure my 5th and 6th ports open?

At this point, I'm looking at a $600 Racing Beat catback exhaust. I think the rest of what I have is still very usable.

Sorry, I don't remember how to check your 5th and 6th ports of the top of my head. But if you do a search it should tell you a trick involving putting grease on them (and checking whether or not the grease gets wiped off). Given your setup, I would guess no. But there are also guides to activate it without exhaust backpressure. Solutions range from a few bucks to pipe in air from your air pump to ~$100 for an electronic rpm triggered actuator. I believe the 5th and 6th ports are worth somewhere in the neighborhood of 20-25HP, so be sure to look into it.

I'll also throw in my voice in for racing beat. According to some members in this forum they'll outlast your car. Their catback sounds like a good option. If your car is still loud you've got a couple options:
1. Look for cracks, replace cracked parts or get the cracks welded.
2. I once had another fc with a big crack running half of the pipe's diameter. I wrapped it with fiberglass insulation, then a piece of aluminum sheet (a.k.a. "flashing") I cut with ordinary scissors, then 3 hose clamps screwed down tight to hold it all in place. Worked perfectly (horribly loud noise went away), and didn't come off. Avoid kinking the sheet metal or you may get holes where the kinks are.

Btw, an exhaust leak will sound horribly loud even if your mufflers are in perfect shape. Check for leaks before you buy new mufflers, unless you're certain your mufflers are bad. My crack was visible and you could feel gasses blowing lightly from it. I hear you can use fog or some such while your car is running to find less obvious leaks. I don't remember if it meant aerosol or a fog machine or what.

if you put big globs of white grease on the rods of the acuators and then go and drice your car hard, then look at the rods and if the grease is moved or smeard then their working.

I got my car with a Monza cat back on it. They are actually good. My car is a vert and a loud exhaust would suck on a long drive. The Monza system is just loud and low enough. My dad has the Racing Beat full race system for his fb and it sounds good. If you have the money than you can't beat the racing beat. The Monza $379 out of Black Dragon automotive. They are designed for the rotary so heat won't burn them out fast.

Rotarymanincraig, I looked at the Black Dragon system that you talked about. What I saw was a black muffler, and it looked as if the inside of the exhaust tips were painted yellow. Is this correct?

Better yet, do you have any pictures of the system on your car? No offense to you, as you sound pretty enthusiastic about your exhaust, but I don't want something that will look odd or rediculous on my car.

p.s. Thank you all very much for the input! I don't know what I'd do without my 7 club. :-)

Monza Exhaust is actually made by Pacesetter. You get what you pay for.If you are on a budget and can get an exhaust shop to do "something",I would suggest to Look into the Universal replacement Cannisters or Mufflers on the Racing Beat site.Located under the Sec gen exhaust Components. They are about 90 dollars..They are In reality, the SAME cannister that is used to Make the RB Mufflers.Only YOU put the Pipes on them.

i had the monza cat back, the tips dont fit in the cut outs and its fitmint is shitty, then i did a duel straight pipe with a header rerusing the monza mufflers, the first day of that they were burnt out, one rattles and the other might still have a little baffling left. i belive their fiberglass packed and sounds ok not the best. like said before you get what you pay for and i can post pics tonight for you of my set up. also one more thing look around if you do get the monza set up dont get it from black dragon they over charge, look around you'll find one hella cheaper.

I may not have been clear before. I definitely DO NOT want loud. Right now, my exhaust sounds bad-***, but far too loud. I want something that sounds deep and throaty without the volume. What I want is a sound that's a low-frequency, but I want it coming out at a low number of decibels. Does that make sense?

Anywho, I spoke with my rotary specialist here in Ohio who suggested another system for somewhere in the neighborhood of $1400 plus some labor. So it's looking like the Racing Beat cat-back (and maybe full dual exhaust from them, eventually) is probably my best bet. I'm gonna need some time to get some money together, tho, so if anyone has any suggestions, I'm still open to them.

Like I said the exhaust came on the car. If I had the money I would buy the RB. Because i'm in college I can't afford that now. The System my dad has was easy to hook up and flows really well. We had to re-jet after putting them on.

the cat back system is pretty good from rb, its not the best they have for performance tho. The true dual set up is 2 loud for what ur lookin for. I have it and around u cant really drive spiritedly without some annoyance from the exhaust.

I don't mind it being loud during spirited driving. I just don't want it to be so loud as to drown out the radio when I'm just cruisin down the freeway at 3000 rpms doing 70 mph

Quiet and RX-7 dont mix neither!!!! haha...

Well I have to say the Racing Beat catback totally rocks, it made my car much quieter than it was before.
I have seen them for sale for decent prices in the buy and sell section of this website....
