exhaust question
Hi Gang,
Some may think that I should search on this, but I really want a current opinion and the search pulled up way too much stuff to wade through.
As some may know, I have an '87 TII with 214,000 miles on it. This week I've had the first costly repairs done. I had a local Rotary Specialist (actually, that's their name - Rotary Specialists) install the transmission I've had on my shop floor waiting for time - which I was never able to find.
While the tranny was out, I had them replace oil seals and the clutch/bearings etc. They also found that both motor mounts were broken along with one transmission mount. (I have to say that there were absolutely no symptoms. The main reason I had the work done, was because it was starting to leak a lot of oil). The final bill is about 3 times what I had planned on spending. *sheesh*
Anyway, the biggest problem they found is that the exhaust is shot. So...time for an upgrade. (I have an emissions test coming in June and guess I just have to suck up and spend the dough.)
What I need from all the gurus is recommendation on exhaust. I would like to improve performance as best I can with this kind of change, but I really don't want the car to be loud. I hate loud vehicles. Power sounds great, but I don't want noise.
So, I would really like to hear is what you recommend - and most importantly - why you think it's a good idea.
This car is my daily driver and crosses the Continental Divide weekly; I plan on running this engine another 80K miles at least.
Thanks,000,000 for sharing your expertise!

DEFINETLY go with racing beat. It's quiet but at the same time gives the car that performance sound i think you're looking for. I have the cat back system on my n/a and I love it. I'd recoment they're full turbo back set up. I haven't heard it yet on a car but my friend should have his tII up and running soon and thats the system he has. It's a gorgeous exhaust tho and I'm sure its going to sound amazing. You'll hear nothing but good things about any of racing beat's products but especially they're exhausts. I have yet to hear any complaints. You'll spend a pretty penny on it but considering it looks, sounds, and lasts much better than just about anything else out there along with functioning wonderfully performance-wise.
FTW = For the win.
And yes, Racing Beat exhaust is, in many opinions, the best.
It sounds basically stock before boost, and then it increases it's sound limit quite a bit. It's not "annoying", but you will be noticed when you want to.

People are biased towards RB. Yes it is a good system, I just dont feel like paying more for an exhaust than what I piad for the car in most cases.
You can also consider Apexi(single[passenger exit], or duals) greddy has a kit, but good luck finding it. Also consider corksport, and if you are cheap ss autochrome.

For the quiestest exhaust, I'de say RB.
Other solutions can be a Borla cat-back, bonez downpipe/highflo cat, RP cat-back, HKS 50MM Cat-back. If you buy something with quiet real mufflers you should be able to run any downpipe/midpipe combination.

And to be a straight through system on my car its not loud at all, untill you stomp on it.
