it should not affect engine temps if you remove the EXHAUST HEATSHIELDS from UNDER the car....i'd understand IF the chassis above the exhaust warms up....

no, unless you are ducting air to the exhaust manifold and ducting it out the bottom/back of the car.

you want to keep the heat inside the exhaust pipes, not cool the pipes, it's energy and you want to keep it inside the exhaust, why do you think exhaust wrap even exists.

also in stop & go traffic you won't have alot of air flowing around there, it's just giong to heat soak the engine bay more than it does with them.

if they are trashed replace them.

A lot of mis-information here. First off clarify which heat shields you are refering to. There are two that are on the under side of the exhaust. There is two large ones between the exhaust and the floor pans. Finally, the exhaust manifold heat shield that is inside the engine bay just below your intake. Which one is rattling and rusted??

The one on top of my manifold has been rattling for a long time because all the bolts rusted to the point that they don't look like bolts anymore and the shielding is just sitting there.

I'm getting ready to yank it off soon and probably just getting some of that adhesive exhaust wrap I have heard about. The biggest thing I'm worried about is that i'll drive through a freezing cold puddle right after pounding the **** out of my car. Thermal expansion might own me there, but I don't know if that's really a huge issue.

Instead of removing it and exposing everything else above to intense heat, try drilling a small hole near the top edge of the shield, then attach a spring from there to the motor mount (I used a 3inch nail to span the gap inside the mount). That will keep it from rattling without messing with the rusted bolts.
