Exhaust Has To Go

Ive only had my 90 GXL for a week or two and I LOVE the car, but I am getting sick of the junky exhaust. I knew the car had bad exhaust when I bought it, and I actually did that on purpose because I would be replacing it anyway.

It has the stock mazda exhaust and after 130 K its pretty worn out. I havent gotten the car on a lift yet to check out the entire exhaust so I dont know exactly which sections are junk, but I am thinking i might as well just do the whole system.

i like the racing beat exhaust and they say it is a lot less restrictive than the stock system but I think the tips could be a bit bigger. On Friday I checked out NCSublime's 91 NA with pacesetter headers, bonez mid race pipe w/out cat and then apex'i n1 dual catback. His exhaust sounds bad ***!!

Anyway I would like to buy new exhaust for my rx-7 within a month or so, depending on when I sell my integra, but what kind of exhaust can I get for like $500-600? (probably nothing much but tell me what you think)

Your 500-600 would probably get you the Apexi N'1 single and maybe dual (I havn't checked it out lately). I have one comming next spring along with a bonez high flow cat system which is going to retail about 900 dollars (maybe I am looking in the wrong place). I didn't want to continue the stupid dual exaust because it really makes no sense on an FD. Oh by the way I am running a 89 GTU N/A that has the same problem with the exaust. I think it is close to the manifold however, I too haven't had it on my lift. If you find out something else besides the bonez high flow and single Apexi N'1 than I would like to know as well.

You car get the Rotary Performance Cat-Back for like $395 I think. I'm not sure how good it is, but they say it uses straight through mufflers. I'm looking at getting either that one or the Apexi N1 Dual.

mine was cheap. get a racing beat header (big boost in power!) and have a shop custom bend a 3" pipe back to a universal 3" muffler. i got a dynomax ultra flow. its great and loud!! it cost about $500 total. installed, everything.

when i 1st got it, i was doing a little drift for my friends at the coffee house and i managed to set of EVERY car alarm there great fun!

I have a 91 n/a w/a ful RB setup. Header, Presilencer and Cat Back. That set up runs real close to a grand. Awesome sound and a great noticable increase in power. However you want to spen around 500-600. I would sugest going with the presilencer and cat back, and just get a down pipe from RB that will fit between the Presilencer and stock manifold.

Cat Back $655
Y Pipe $170
R L Mufflers $398
D Pipe 3 $90

S youre looking at about close to $800 including SH. A header costs $187. Thats double the price for the Down Pipe, but worth the money for freeing up that last bit of restriction and the HP gain.

If cost is an issue, the kit from Mazdatrix is a box with four pieces of mandrel bent thick wall tube and two flanges. I had to enlarge the picture of the RB header to see where to mark the pieces for cutting and assembly. (The RB assembled and plated header is worth the extra $100, but I was a little short.) I pulled the old system, header and all, and drove very gently to the muffler shop, except for one time I was behind a guy on a Harley. I just had to punch the gas to watch his head spin around - small mistake - I melted the plastic straps on the wheelhouse. The shop cut & welded the header, ran two pipes back to the middle of the space where the main cat was, and installed two $20 "turbo" presilencers, and finished with two pipes to the original mufflers. That’s where my $200 budget ran out. I talked with shop about going straight through. Their answer was when other RX-7’s went straight to the mufflers, they usually came back for presilencers later.
The results: Sound level only slightly higher than stock. No loss in low end torque. Nice growl under load. Not dramatic, but noticeable power gain at 5-7k. I can tell the stock mufflers are there at 7-8k. I really need to open up the intake to match the exhaust, then maybe some straight through mufflers.
