Why are animals living in my intake!?!?!?!?!

Just got my car yesterday, replaced the fender yesterday. Today I cleaned the exterior and fooled around with the motor for a little bit. Found 3 pounds of acorn nuts in the drivers side door, inside the car.

Pulled the air filter cover. HOLLY CRAP! Theres a birds nest! Dammit I shouldnt have redlined it during the testdrive! Looks like the critters nipped some small holes in the air filter, OH NO! MORE ACORNS! Dont think any of those dropped into the intake though. Man this is one strange project after another.

I had to stand on a 4 foot breaker bar to loosen the lug nuts on the front wheel!! Now Im letting wd40 do the job.

And if thats not enough, theres a little unit type of thing mounted right under the dash. One switch - off-city-highway and 2 leds. Turn the thing to highway, its a f*cking radar detector from like 1983 and it says CHEVROLET on the top! Only does radar so I guess I will be picking up microwaves and potholes.

I've heard from a good source, that acorn shells fed down the intake will clean the carbon off the rotors. Give it a try and see if it works. If it does not, don't write back. *humor, please*

it's a f*cking radar detector
This thing? This is a factory radar detector. If it looks like this and you don't want, I'll buy it. Working or not.

The radar detector says CHEVY on it. The picture is unclear, but you can make out the chevy "bowtie" or "Cross" thing on the right hand side of the unit.. It has a nice custom fit but I dought it is going to save me from anything except leaking microwave ovens.

Why is yours mounted like that? Mine is under the dash. How much do you want to spend on this thing? It seems to work fine.

heres a pic of it

I don't have one, that's not my car. I was told that one in the photo I posted is a factory RX-7 unit and that it's mounted where it's supposed to be.

Your's looks very similar but, has Chevy written on it so, I don't want it.

I don't want one to actually use. I would though, like my car to have that factory option.

I wonder if, say, Chevy contracted out to the same people as mazda. Maybe a late 80s vette has the same radar detector?? I dont know.
From the looks of the pic you posted, theres a reflection where you cant see anything, maybe its a chevy too.
If my detector is indeed a factory option, it is definatly mounted to fit perfectly under the dash. Seems as if the one in your pic is in an awkward place because if you look at the side of mine, it has like a 30 degree bend, fits flush with dash.

Ill send an email to the original owner, maybe he can tell me the story on it. If it is or was a true mazda detector, how much would it be worth????

Yes please, try to find out if yours is actually factory and in the correct location. I'd appreciate knowing.

Thanks,
Mike

Lots of older Jags have those (early-mid 90's). They where dealer options NOT factory options. They are pretty universal. You could find a place to mount it in just about any car where it would look right.

I gave my engine a thorough cleaning back in June... When I removed my intake airbox and opened it up I found a TON of jelly beans in there, many of them crusted to the bottom and sides.

It was highly disturbing... Mice had obviously taken advantage of the fact that my car had been parked in the garage, as I'd also found a ton of dog food and fuzzy lint-like stuff all over the engine bay.

Quite the pain in the *** to clean out.
