exhaust fumes out of coolant overflow tank
(I allready posted this in an other thread but that is getting into a (very interesting) discussion wether to use stop leak or not, so I post the key points again, I really would appreciate some more opinions on this)
My car starts and runs good, does not smoke much, does not use excessive amounts of coolant and does not overheat.
It does push coolant in the overflow tank without sucking it in again when cooling down thus leaving an empty upper radiator hose and I can see exhaust fumes coming out of the coolant overflow tank even when idling. So there must be a rather large leak.
The first symtoms are in contradiction with the second, how can this be???
Fumes coming from the tank
Marco.

are you sure they are xhaust fumes? my car was doin that and it turned out it was a tiny crack in the hose coming from the block and goin to the heater. Mine was blowing the coolant out into the overflow but the when it cooled it sucked air into the radiator through the split hose, I had steam and stuff coming thorough the overflow, my car was getting hot but only to a point. Dunno if that helps any, just what was wrong with mine with almost the same conditions.

The problem that I have is that it is a 100 miles drive to the nearest rotaryshop. I do not know if I dare to take the risk to drive overthere to get a pressuretest.
The local mazda dealers don't want to have anything to do with rotaries, I hate them for that.

I know EXACTLY what you're talking about. My car experienced the same thing. There were bubbles in the antifreeze while running... After the symptoms became worse, it pushed the coolant out through the resevoir. This ultimately led to a lack of coolant in my block, and an excess amount of coolant on the ground. I had a few guys from this forum help me diagnose the problem and it was EXACTLY what they described. The water jacket seal was busted... and the metal edge that was supposed to keep it from blowing from all the pressure had become corroded, so a nice chunk of it was missing. I had to get an engine rebuild which ended up costing me $2050CDN which translates to $5 USD. Hope this helps.
