The Exhaust debate.

Hola!!!!

Before I start... I know what everyone will say... Go Racing Beat!!!! Or GO HKS!!!

That being said, I'm building a custom Exhaust for my car.

It's an 87 T2 and currently has 2.5 cat back with giant-*** 4 inch fart pipes on it... not a fan of that. And outside of a high flow air filter is unmodded.

So here's where I'm going, and looking for opinions/input from thine who know.

First off, my priority is 2 fold. I enjoy performance and want more of it but I'm also a fan of having a car that is not obnoxious loud. So i gotta comprimise between the two.

The current plan is to remove everything, and go with a turbo downpipe, to a turbo muffler where the cat was, out the Y to 2 2.5 inch High flows with 2.5-3 inch tips. The entire system would be madrel bent 2.5 stainless steel.

That's option 1

Option 2 is to go 3 inch from the turbo back, a bigger turbo muffler to cut sound, out to a single 3 inch high flow with 3 inch tip.

I'll be able to put togetehr either option for >$500

So keeping in mind that I'm willing to sacrifice some power for a quiet idle and a decent tone at WOT what do ye the great rotary GAWDS think?

PAX

I have an 88 T2 with RB full exhaust and a presiliencer with no cats. I'm having to port my wastegate because the catless system allows the turbo to spool so fast the stock ported wastegate will not cut it. My boost spikes at about 15 and takes some time to get back down to 13, which is also too high. I'm shooting for 10-11 psi. I have a blitz SBCID II and it still overboosts badly. So if your going catless(which is they way to go) standby to port your wastegate. There is a hyperlink in a thread i posted on porting of the wastegate. good luck with your exhaust, stephen.

if you want to keep it quiet use a dual exhaust system... you can get more flow and less noise with the cost of weight (and money of corse) a presilencer may also help on the hush front... my t2 currently has a 2.5" dp back exhaust (still stock precats but no main cat) and it is WAY louder than with the 2.5 duals... on another note.. my N/A had a rb header to 2.5" single straightpipe with a high quality muffler... and I got pulled over cause the cops thought I was racing 3 cars... so I switched to a dual and now it only sounds like 2 cars...lol.

Yea same inquiry ^^^ my single exhaust system acts like a 6 am alarm for the entire block. Dual sounds like what I need but I'm really after the quietness. Highway patrol knows me by first name basis now....

I've never heard the RB Cat-back... just the video clip of the turbo back model.

I'm not interested in getting a Boost controler and FCD ATM so I may just go with the RB cat back.

If anyone has a sound clip that'd be swell, just wondering about idle/normal driving/WOT sounds.

the Borla mufflers are pretty sweet, but the only one I would want ot use is the 3 in and out Can... and 3 is a bit too big for the sound requirments I'm looking for.

I will be keeping it dual... now it's just do I build it myself or get one of the kits...

And does anyone know anything about the Walker Dynomax kit on Mazdatrix... kinda looks like crap, but wondering if anyone has any experience with it?

Thanks all

1.. Forget about the boost controller, it cannot help you LIMIT the amount of boost you are going to see after exhaust mods... only a bigger wastegate can do that.......

As for the FCD... with a free flow catback system and cone filter off the AFM.. you may STILL go over 8 PSI of boost and hit fuel cut... you'll know it if it happens cause you'll think you blew the car up!!!

2) Turbo23 has a video of me floggin my car with a full racing beat system.. Its nice, not insanely loud, but, as they say in the guitar forums, " its got GREAT tone man!!" I'll see if he can p[ost it or send it to ya.. keep in mind, if you have a cat, its going to be much quieter

3) Walker= stuff i'd use on my truck or beater car... NOT on my rx-7

4) You MIGHT like the sound of a Borla x-1 as a presilencer and dual supertrapp cans .. someone here has that setup and i REALLY liked it!! To make life easier on yourself.. It would pay to get a Racing Beat or other pre-made y-pipe and then buy the flanges to match from RB or Mazdatrix and have them wleded to the mufflers you choose!!!!
