Exhaust Combo Question-Header, Cats, ETC.

'87 NA
I semi-ported the exhaust manifold when I had it off today. Opened it up about 1/4-1/2" in diameter

OK, here's my plan:
1. Emissions car with stock cats/exhaust (I can't believe it still on there, damn thing is 16 years old)

2. Then, replace the cat-back with the Dynomax setup.

3. Get the Bonez testpipe/pre-silencer setup

4. RB Header

Now, my questions are:
1. Will this be annoyingly loud?
2. Will my 5th/6th ports still work? If not, I may do the air-pump mod
3. Will the RB header bolt up to the bonez test-pipe?
4. Anything else I need to worry about (02 sensor, etc?)
5. Other recommendations?

I'm not looking for terribly loud, or looking for all out performance. My Grand Prix is the fast car. I just want better performance, and sound, without it behing horribly loud.

Sorry if this has been asked, or seems dumb. I've been trying to read and learn.

1. Sound varies depending on what you think is loud, i run RB Header, presilencer, and N1 Catback, gets alittle loud at times.

2.Personally i liked the wired ports better then actuated ports, you use some low end torque yet it makes up for it in the higher RPMs.

3.I dont think the header will bolt up to the bonez racepipe, people usually get the RB header presilencer combo, works great.

4. Just dont expect it to be totally quiet, i really dont think mine is very loud, but it got louder then before without the header.

5.I would recommend wiring the ports open, some may disagree, but from what i understand if you get the header presilencer combo your ports will still work

ERic.

I definitly don't wanna wire the ports open. The thing is doggy enough as it. I want the low end there. Havint them actuate gives me the low and, and the same high end as wiring them open.
I'm used to driving my GP with over 300ft-lbs of TQ at 2000 RPM, I need all the low end I can get.

Thanks fo rthe reccomendations. I was afraid the bonez wouldn't bolt up, but thats OK.

Unless you get pipes for each exhaust port.

OK, to header, or not to header?
Reading on the racingbeat site:

1986-92 RX-7 (Non-turbo) Streetable Header/Collector*
For optimum performance gains for this application, we recommend that a header be used on an engine configured with a carburetor intake system. For this reason, we suggest another suitable configuration for use on a fuel-injected engine is the Racing Beat Catalytic Converter Replacement Pipe with Presilencer combo
Or, could I do the Road Racing Header, and fit up a pre-silencer as well?
Which do most of you have, the road race header, or the header/collector?

So, is it worth it? I do plan on doing the aftermarket dynomax) exhaust system as well.

I'll probably re-work the 5/6th ports, so the backpressure isn't a concern. Only noise level.

um, if tthey're talking about the RB dopwn pipe and presilencer then yeah, its great. I love mine.

And its not obnoxiously loud. its smooth. When all the ports are fully open it is a little bit louderr than normal, but like I said it sounds good.

The reason I think its such a good upgrade is because the cat replacement with the RB downpipe greatly improves the cars ability to breath. Its the most noticable improvement on proformance that I have ever done.

Here's the set up I have.

Thanks, that helps a lot. You have the header/collector, and the pre-silencer, and their full exhaust.

Yup.

Just one other thought thought.

When I was looking for an exhuast system I thought of many different combinations of exhaust systems. I wanted mine original

But Since I'm the king at mixing and matching aftermarket parts only to have them blow up in my face......

I am glad that I got the whole Rb set up instead of mixing up the exhaust scheme. That is, I think that when you're talking about the type of noise that's generated, you want what RB designed for a RB system.

Not what Bonez designed for their Bonez system Mixed in with what RB designed for their system....There really is something to be said for continuity.

But that's my opinion

Where did you get the full setup from? Thats really what I'm looking for. I like the way yours looks in that pic, as I don't need all the polished stuff. Just want nice shiny tips.

Thanks.

Thanks again.

Looks like I can piece that one together slowly too, which is a big advantage.
