Standalone ECU and good tuning.

For reference, I consistently hit 18-19mpg full city driving with the 2nd gen as my DD to school. Did that for quite a long time, and I still had some spirited driving I did each day. It's all about setup and tuning. Still had stock ECU, engine was ported, was running a TII fuel pump, and I had an s-afc.

That being said, my list...

- Weight reduction, lighter car = less power needed to move = better mpg
- Full tuneup, and I mean FULL
- Some type of fuel controller if you don't want to go full standalone, tune for cruise map
- Don't drive like a moron

I think tofuball is able to get significantly over 20 mpg when it's highway only... I don't know what he's getting in the city now that he's leaned out the part of the map he's in for city driving..

He's got a megasquirt running fuel, ignition, aux ports, and VDI though...

Getting good gas mileage in an FC just isn't any fun.

I am able to get around 23MPH on the highway, in my NA.. I have a Megasquirt controlling the fuel, and I'm running a tad on the lean side for highway cruising.. I don't baby it, though, in town and on the mountains I still drive it like I stole it, fuel efficiency be damned

I think I'll be able to keep around the same (20-23MPG) when I go turbo, since I'm also getting a wideband at the same time for more accurate tuning.

All emmissions and exhaust restrictions removed, as well as almost everything unnessesary in the engine bay.

Bump your tire air pressure up a few psi. On the highway, drive fairly slow (ie. don't speed much). In the city, be slower on the throttle and coast more to slow down (helps avoid full stops at lights). I found adding the K&N cone filter made a pretty substantial difference in fuel economy. I found that doing the exhaust didn't help as much as that.

There are a bunch of threads on the topic so for some additional info you can take a look at those.

Damn! How'd you manage that? Gut the interior, remove the windows and swapped the rotary for a motorcycle engine? =P

Where'd you lose the 250lbs from the rated curb weight?

I have a 93 Honda Civic Crap Box that I drive on snow days, and at least 3 days a week to keep fuel costs down.

Works great!

dont listen to thier crap!

I dont have a stand alone or a SAFC either. stock ecu is controlling everything.

i get 20mpg regardly of how i drive. WIERD i dont know how but i do. (yes i calulate my gas correctly. reset everytime i get gas. I always top off my gas and divid miles by gallons put in.duh)

get a full tune up.
oil, tranny fluid, diff fluid, spark plugs, spark plug wires, O2 sensor, battery if needed, alternator if needed.

add another ground from your negitive terminal on batter to the block ground

replace your tranny ground to fire wall (right by your wiper motor)

ground ecu will be good tooz(havent done it yet)

get a voltage stablizier (YES IT DOES WORK, I went from 17mpg-20mpg after installing, idle smoothened out to basicly perfect, and rpms are much smoother) I got mine for 150 shipped off of ebay i paid the extra money for the buddy club one. apexi makes one as well.

from there you will get around 19-20mpg. Like me if you decide to get any stand alone you will get even better gas milage but i saw someone get a megaquirt and only get 20mpg well thats not worth the 200-400dollars plus labor and stuff. (dont quote me because i didnt do any research on megasquirt but i do know its a pretty good standalone once put together PROPERLY)

you can also use a safc to lean out the low end just a little to get better gas so i heard. but I'm happy with my 20mpg.

NOW, if you are talking about getting 30-40mpg your a retard sell your rx7 and get a honda they are great cars for commuters and you can actually run those cars to **** and they last forever.

have any questions PM me.

like I said no matter how i drive (always drive hard as hell) i get 20mpg. even when i drove to Riverside from Bayarea (basicly bayarea to la)

ignition systems like msd or the jacobs system apparently help mileage by 2 or 3 mpg

What is this Power Neo you speak of?

It is, low compression can equal lower power which means you have to use more gas to get up to higher mph...

BUT HERE'S THE BEST ANSWER YET...
