Ever seen this much smoke? *VIDEO* (wtf is wrong with my car?)

http://www.cupofnoodles.com/~trm-gla/rx7/000_0469.MOV - *fixed*
Sorry for quicktime format

Ok... my turbo was smoking a bit prior to this, and was relatively quickly getting worse. I am looking for a new turbo right now. My car has an oil leak or two, and I noticed a fairly big deposit on my driveway, so stupidly I added oil to my car without checking the oil level. Then this started happening. The car is quite a bit over full (maybe a quarter-litre or half-litre), but still.

It definitely does NOT smell like coolant. It smells like oil while driving the car, and while it is smoking, but not overwhelmingly. The car does not smoke when driving, nor does it smoke before it is at Operating Temperature.

The car runs as it did before (not perfect, but good). It does not overheat. And the turbo is still boosting, albeit not as hard as it should be (my boost gauge is broken, but I can feel it).

So yeah, it smokes like this only when stopped after being warmed to operating temperature.

Any ideas wtf is wrong with my car?

Hey vex, you coming up to SIR on sunday? Il be there I could probably help you out easily.

anyways, Pull your intake off and check for shaft play on the turbo. One way to check if its the turbo is to decellerate and watch for smoke. Other than that, there could be too much oil pressure being built up causing it to leak past the turbo seals. Or the worst, the oil control rings on the motor are fucked. One way to check the rings are to hold the revs at 4000rpm and wait for 20 odd seconds, if shes smokes like a bitch, you've got a rebuild coming.

Id put my money on your turbo though. Mine is doing the same thing, and there is a good 1/4" of shaft play front to back. I'm still racing though so everyone will be in for a mosquito killing show.

do you ave your emissions removed or is your PCV valve working correctly? if you have your emissions removed you have to have some kind of oil catch tank that is vented to catch blow by and it will relieve the pressure in your crank case so you dont smoke like a stack.

Emissions are removed... by previous owner. Not sure if there is an oil catch tank, although I will buy one if there isn't one... where would it be located?

Also, it only smells like oil if I was just boosting.

Ryan, yeah, the boost then decelerate trick was how I knew my turbo was gone before... but after I added a litre or two of oil, she smokes like this. I won't be out at SiR, but I will be at performance plus tomorrow for the Dyno Day. I won't have my car there though.

When the engine is burning excessive oil, the smoke is white.
When the engine is burning coolant, the smoke is white.
When the engine is running too rich or misfiring, the smoke is white.

The only way to tell what it is is to SMELL it.
If it smells like oil, it's oil burning.

It doesn't always smell like oil... sometimes it doesn't smell at all. It never smells like coolant, nor does it smell like fuel.

My exhaust looks exactly like that when the car is first started (after sitting a few days), but it clears up after 30 seconds or so... FYI, my car is completly stock.

It doesn't clear up though, it will run like this until I shut off the car, or so I think... I've only ever let it run for like 1 minute though, because by then there is a cloud of smoke engulfing the entire surrounding area.

omg, so much **** flying around. I must say what I thought it was before I watched the video, and I thought the exact thing after the video. BAD TURBO! Try what the other guy said, and check for turbo shaft play. There should be none.

No dont go and say it's a bad turbo. My friend has an fd, and his is doing the same exact thing. he just put a brand new turbo on it too. and it smokes even more than the first one. It may be there is too much oil going to the turbo and it is just burning the excess. I forgot what it is called that you would need if that was the problem. Something to regulate the amount of oil going to the turbo.

i didnt watch the video, but excessive smoke= 2 possibilities; either bad turbo or bad oil seals.

look at your spark plugs. if its a bad turbo, they will look fine. if its a bad oil seal, they will have black **** all over them. (a lot of black ****,a little bit is normal, but a real smoker will make significant buildup)

I won't rule out the turbo, but the thread starter had mentioned it's overfilled with oil. I'd address that situation first sice it's the cheapest and easiest thing to check, then look onward.

Well, my turbo was smoking before this... so I am going to replace it as well. (I was planning on doing this before I overfilled with oil).

Anyway, I am going to do an oil change sometime in the next couple of days, and we'll see if that remedies anything.

Will be replacing turbo sometime in the next week or two.
