estimate on cost of rebuilt motor?

estimate on cost of rebuilt motor?

i'm thinking about saving up for a nice straight, shiny 2nd gen w/ a blown motor (hope to pay less than about 800 for it) and then install a rebuilt job (mild streetport, polly).

what can i expect to shell out on a project like that? i'd want it installed and everything.

j-spec TII long blocks can be had for as little as $750 or so. These are used engines though, not rebuilds.

I havent had to check on rebuild prices yet, but you'll need a core-
I think a mazda reman engine is like $2k without a core-

I just spend $1600 alone for parts for a engine I had just bought, if you want to do it right, it won't be cheap. So far I spent $1700 for a good running engine along with a T2 tranny with 50 miles on it and $1600 building the motor up, but I will have a basically new engine with a heavy street port, and a new tranny for about $4000.

JSPEC = about $800 + Installation which if you can't do it yourself is about 16 hours of labor charges + what ever parts need to be replaced while the engine is out......I'd say installation costs could easily be over $1000 with parts.

i asked a similar question, and i'm planning a similar project,
however, i've been looking around and it looks like it'll be hard to find a shiny 2nd gen for under 1000 when you go sub 1000 the body get's banged up too, not just the engine

but i was pointed to

they've got them, i am planning on inquiring about the cosmo 1.3 twin turbo engine... and supposedly they can be had for around 1200 shipped... but i've found no verification of that

Are you guys aware that JSPEC motors are TURBO?????..
I dont think you guys knew that!..
Is the car your are planning to buy a TURBOII???

It will cost alot if you are planning to put a JSPEC motor in your N/A. One other major swap is tranny. You of course have to swap the tranny to a tranny from a TII. ECU, harness, and some other things that im too lazy to list.

PS: Im rebuilding my Turbo motor and its costing me more than 2K now. New parts except the rotors and eshaft. And its not even together yet!..If i were you i'd rebuild it myself!...it will save you money!..

the j spec motors are all turbo, but the bolt pattern is the same so you dont have to swap trannies if you dont want to. you do have to swap engine wiring harnesses, and ecu's- or you could go haltech or something. plan on about 3000-3500 to do the whole car (engine, hoses, belts, pulsation damper, clutch, vacuum lines, plastic bit on the inside, engine and tranny mounts, etc, etc)

Plus, I do believe the J-spec turbos don't have the EGR passage so they will fail smog test on the EGR idle down segment no matter what you do. Luckily I live in the backwoods and smog techs just do tailpipe emissions and a glance at the exhaust system, so I passed.

Wink Rebuild costs

I rebuilt my '86NA in April. The total cost was over two grand, but maybe I went overboard. All I know is I was tired of having two back to back engine failures. The first was the original 125K engine. The second was a used engine with alledgedly 40K on it. It lasted less than 10k.

I had the end housings lapped and re-nitrided. That was around 300 not counting the shipping costs. Both rotor housings are new Mazda parts. All the main and rotor bearings were replaced, the e-shaft was polished, all new seals and springs were installed on rotors, and many other small parts were replaced. The oil metering pump was modified to use two stroke oil. the starter and alternator had the brushes and bearings replaced, and all the hoses (vac and coolant) were replaced along with the belts.

I did all the work myself. Now I have a rex I can trust and have driven over 10K since overhaul with nary a problem, except my own oversight in not replacing the expansion plugs during rebuild. These leaked anti-freeze and have since been replaced.

how much HP do the jspec turbo's produce? is it more than our 'domestic' counterpart?

and when you buy a jspec engine from say corksport... willi t come w/ an IC? or not?

Rampage Racing installed a rebuilt NA motor (no porting, stock seals) for $2300 complete, but they got to keep my old core.
