Is this adjustment screw you speak of have a screw inside a plastic tube and the tube is mounted to a diamond shaped piece of metal or plastic. If this is what you are referring to then it is the "variable resistor" and it's role is to contol the fuel mixture while the car is idling.

2nd pic in post #166. Is this it?

It's used when setting the idle. Jumper the initial set coupler, start and warm up car, turn variable resistor screw to make the rpm reach the highest level possible, turn idle adjust screw on top of throttle body till the rpm drops to 750, adjust varaiable resistor screw to lower RPM to 730 and then remove jumper wire and you are done. Last step seems a bit futile since it's hard to witness a 100 RPM movement let alone 20 RPM.

CAUTION: screw moves only so much in either direction so don't break it!
