Engine wont turn over.....

I just aquired a 1987 Turbo II from a guy here in town. He said when he bought it he was told the tranny was no good in it. When i turn the key over it clicks once..all the lights go dim then when i turn the key back lights come back on. Clutch doesnt feel spongy or even gone and i pulled the starter and no signs of teeth damage on the flywheel. The shifter is awfully loose as it just flops around and even goes pulls striaght up and down but it still goes into gears. If anybody has some suggestions or ideas they are greatly appreciated.

check condition of battery and battery cables. then see if engine turns over w/ tranny in neutral (use socket to turn crank pulley bolt or alternator pulley bolt).

can you move (push) the car when it is in neutral?

if its a locked up tranny you're gonna have to pull it out and spin input shaft by hand to verify. used ones can be found for a few hundred bucks.

the sloppy shifter needs new shifter bushings. they are plastic, prone to wear out, and not difficult to change. mazdatrix or dealer sells them

Thanks for the quick replys. Took the starter to AutoZone for them to test it and the guy says the solenoid is bad but starter motor is good. The battery is brand new with a charge.

The car can be pushed while in neutral with no problems besides the half flat tires...lol
