Cool Engine teardown

Well I finally got around to tearing down a `89 NA engine I bought as a rebuildable core for $125.00. The pics are here. It was supposed to have a blown rear rotor (sold as no compression on rear rotor) but I found NO internal damage as you can see.

The irons are not rusted, its a reflection from my garage ceiling. The housings look to be okay with just a visible mark which you can see in the pics. The rotors were pretty black with carbon. I will replace the bearings so I used Zep Purple to clean the rotors, man that stuff does a good job. I will be using the Zep Orange to clean the housings and the irons as well. (I may try to find a shop around here that has a (hot/steam parts washer) I removed all apex seals and springs, side seals and springs, cornerseals and springs and oils seals, carriers and springs. All springs and seals were in place and appeared to be ok although thay may have had a lot of carbon causing some sticking
There was only 95K on the odometer of the car this engine came out of. What should I look for as far as wear that would require replacement of any of these components?

Should I have irons lapped?
Should I have housings ceramic coated?

Looks good... glad you didn't find any damage.. I just tore down my s4 block today and found the damage where an apex seal chewed its way out of the housing... good luck on the rebuild...

Lapping the irons is not desired it remove the nitrate coating or makes it very thin. You need to spec them out on a dial indicator and see. You need to spec out the housings for wear to we cant just magical tell if they are in spec. Check the jackets really well for possible pitting and corrosion.

I am not failure with ceramic coating the housings far as I know you cant but I dunno about this. They are coated as well from factory.

Spec them out and check the stat gears is about it. You wont know the end play until assembly.
