engine swap.. not sure if interchangeable..

I have a 86NA(automatic trans) getting ready for an engine swap, my replacement engine, coming from 88NA (manual trans), will it work on my 86NA? I was told by the guy in the junk yard that because my 86NA is an automatic the 88NA is not compatible with mine. Is he right? I want to convert it to manual but my wife drives this car most of the time and she want automatic so it is staying automatic. Or should I stick to 86NA replacement engine? Any input will be appreciated.

I think that will work fine. You might need to make some minor adjustments but as long as the engine you're getting is just a shortblock I think you'll be ok

86-88s will be a straight swap. smack your local junkyard worker. if it was an 89 it wouldn't though...

did it, work out fine
just use the short block, remove the pilot bearing with the tool. it is almost impossible without it, i did chang the front counter weight but should be ok.

only problem is i get terrible gas miles, but its because i drop the tranny

Anymore words of wisdom out there? I'm getting ready to pull the 88NA out of the donor car this weekend so i want to be very sure before I tackle this one.

It will definitely work. All 86-88 NAs have the exact same engine
