engine revs at idle

when i start my engine i let the car rev up to 3000rpm (as normal) but then when it drops to idle rpm range (around 800) it revs on its own... in short spurts peaking at around 1500-2000. it really creeps me out, but it stops when i rev it on my own again. I know this sounds like a very minor situation, but it could be the start of something more serious. has anyone seen this before? thanks

My car has done that once. I was at the drag strip and of course I'm running it hard, but after I came back to the lanes to wait for my turn again my car started reving on its own like you said. I turned my car off after a while to let the turbo cool down, and after that it has never done it since. This was like 4 years ago.

I'm not positive, but what I was told is that the car is trying to get used to the atmosphere around it (kinda like it's searching for the right setting according to what the sensors are telling the computer maybe?). I know there is a better explanation, but like I said, I'm going off what I was told. I am pretty positive it is nothing to worry about though. My car did the same thing and it ran fine before and after this happened.
