engine porting questions

I've got a few questions about street porting my 87' N/A:

#1- If I street port my engine, will I still be able to pass emissions? It would seem that I would be able to, hence "street" port, but just making sure.

#2- Do I need to buy templates to do the porting, or can I make my own templates?

#3- How difficult is this task? If it's doable, I'm up for the challenge. Doesn't look too hard from the write-ups and how-to's and what not, but I've never done it before.

#4- Is there anything else I should know before attempting this?

Thats all I can think of, for now. Thanks in advance

I would also like to know if you need any special tools or can this be done with a dremme and some grinding bits?

I was thinking about doing this but after soem thought and thoughts from other forum members I came to a conclusion.

Its not worth it.

Seems like with 13b 6-port engines a street port isnt gonna give a whole lot of gain, especially not for the $250 it costs. (even if you do it yourself, dremel is $50 and templates are another $80)

Based on this I decided not to do it on my engine.

#1 -- You MIGHT pass. Depends on a LOT of variables (how soon you open/close the exhaust/intake port(s) and the type of exhaust system)

#2 -- Templates? If you don't know what you're doing, GET THEM. Make sure to match them to the pictures on mazdatrix's website (www.mazdatrix.com). BTW, don't expect to pass smog. The templates open the exhaust earlier into the combustion cycle, this more unburned fuel escapes.

#3 -- Doable? Sure is. It's not hard to do, but it is very time consuming. If you have patience, I suggest you use it. Also, make sure your grinding skills are up to the challenge by cutting on junk metal or something (an old lawnmower motor block works great!)

#4 -- Any hidden things? Buy the correct tools! Don't skimp-out on good quality bits/stones. Get 3 different types of "firecrackers" (sandpaper dowels); medium, fine, and extra fine. Make everything nice, smooth and straight. Bevel the edges where you cut, so the seals don't potentially catch the lip of the port and do damage.

I used an abrasive blade on my sawzall to cut the tops of the difusers off and then used a carbide cutting bit to take the stubs down.

The inserts are SS so they're really hard, but it can be done in less than a couple hours.

If you're porting the exhaust on an N/A motor you wouldn't want to lower the exhaust port (causing it to open earlier) because that will kill your torque. I raised mine maybe 1/4" and smoothed it into the insert so that it increases the overlap slightly (benefitting higher rpm power) so as to increase the exhaust scavenging and suction on the intake charge which results.

And this is my first rotary rebuild... Who needs templates? Look at the pictures and look at the housings. You just need to make sure they all match each other.
