engine performance problem
(I am posting this for a friend). He has a 1989 Rx7 GTU and it runs great except the power starts to die out around 5500 rpm and it won't go much past 6000 rpm. The car used to be an automatic, the preivous owner swapped it to a manual, so are auto and manual ecu's different or could it be something else? Please, any help would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Robbie

Former Moderator. RIP Icemark.
no the ECUs are the same, the auto tranny versions add a TCU.
Sounds like the VDI and 5th/6th ports are not fuctioning or he has a clogged cat.
Could also be poor engine grounds, bad spark plugs/ cables, dirty fuel filter and half dozen other things.
I would do a tune up first and replace all the filters fluids, and spark plug cables and plugs, then check for VDI and 5th/6th port operation.
