Unhappy engine light

Ok i posted this in 2nd gen tech support, but I haven't recieved a big response, so here it is again. My engine light is on...it goes on when i let off the gas and goes off when i press it again. Also, it seems to correspond with some type of backfire and idle bounce. It has been three days and I am supposed to drive it to Charlotte tomorrow, about two hours away. What do you think is wrong? Do you think I should drive it that far? It's a fairly new engine. COuld it be my spark plugs? I don't know when the last time they were changed was. Please help. Oh hey, I just did an engine code check, GOD I LOVE THIS SITE, and it came up throttle sensor problem. Now what????????

Well, first thing... did you set your TPS when you got the new engine installed? With any luck that's all you need to do. Do you have the lamp setup for doing the TPS or a DVM?

Well, the TPS is the throttle position sensor, and that could possibly be causing whats happening, but I think its more for how rich/lean the engine runs at different levels of throttle. I'm not positive, but I thinkt hat it would have to be something more than that... Definetly try changing the plugs, they tend to get fouled real quick if the engine isn't running right anyways. Is your car an na or a turbo? I'll admit that i have no idea how you checked your codes, is there an easy way to do it? I don't really know what other sensors would bring up that error code, but im sure someone here does, good luck to ya!

Cool

Hi. OK, did you get a code 12 or 18 (Full range throttle sensor or narrow range throttle sensor)? If it's a code 12, it's ok, that is used for the electric Oil Metering Pump. If it's the code 18, that is a problem. First step is to check resistance with a DVM (should be 1Kohm with a fully warmed up engine, not started), or with lights. If the adjustment is OK, and your ECU isn't bad, replace the throttle sensor assembly. All this assumes, of course, an 89 or later RX7. Have fun!

Talking

Correction to my post about the full range throttle position sensor being no problem - it could be over time if not corrected, because it affects the amount of oil being injected, and thus could cause accelerated apex seal wear. Sorry about that!

well i made it to charlotte and back, about 350-400 miles. Anyway, the car did fine except for the damn light, it's constantly on now when i let off the gas, it used to be only after driving for a while. It's going to the shop on Tuesday, sniff. I will have to drive the mustang 5.0 for a few days, SNIFF. Anyway, so i will have it checked out.. thanks IRV.
