Engine Dies, won't go into gear, smells like burning

I have a '88 NA with 180,000kms on it. As back reference it always starts no prob, doesn't have hot start problems doesn't burn coolant. It's been tough getting into 1st gear but has always been like that I just assumed it's how they are.

Sunday I was driving home everything was working fine I ran it through 1st and 2nd gear then about 20 sec later the clutch was feeling a little soft like there was air in the line. I was about 1 min from my place with a shitload of groceries so I though I could nurse it back. Then every time I pressed the clutch there was a whirring sound then as I tried to change into 2nd it was screetching so I put it in neutral and stopped right away. I popped the hood and it smelled like burning. I then tried to start it and it just cranked but wouldn't start. I pulled the ecu fuse cranked for 10 sec, replaced fuse and it started. I then when I pressed the clutch tried to put it in gear it wouldn't go in gear and the engine died and wouldn't restart. I first though it was clutch related but I don't know why that would stop it from running or starting. Anyone have a similar situation, Almost seems like what happens to 2G DSMs when they get crankwalk.

Well my first instinct is 'clutch', but I can't be sure. My only other guess might be you spun a bearing in the motor, but I don't think that lines up with the 'not going into gear' symptom.

*bear in mind I haven't seen this particular problem before

Do you know when the clutch was last changed? Sounds like what happened to me when my clutch fell apart, strange that it wont start in neutral though.

Well I would say obvious clutch problem whether its the disc or the hydraulic portion. Did it not just flood again since it died on you? You were not too clear about whether you tried unflooding a second time or not. Thats about all I am useful for sorry.
