Engine cutting out while driving

Strange issue -

Just a short time ago my car has started to cut off while I am driving. It seems to be getting worse and I don't know what it is. You can watch as the rpm gage goes from 3 grand to zero, then back up again. This morning while idling, it cut off on me for the first time, suggesting this might be a worsening condition.

I hope you guru's can help me figure this out.

Thanks in advance.

A spark plug wire arcing can cause this. Check your wires?

I did, but not well. I'll check this evening. I'm just at a loss. The last time I had anything like this start to happen, I lost an apex seal about a week later. I don't want that to happen again.

Also, it is getting a little hard to start. Almost like there's no spark....I don't know.

I'll check the electrical tonigh, if you have any other ideas, please let me know.

I say pull the wires right off to do an inspection and reattach to be sure.

Maybe you'll get lucky and one of the wires was getting loose or wasen't put on properly last time they were plugged in.

Best of luck.

Quick question, could a fuel pump that is about to go cause this issue?

I tried starting the car for 45 minutes this morning, but it woul not start. Pulled the fuel return hose and it took a couple of seconds for fuel to pour out, I figured it should have come out faster.

I'm going to check the start with ether if it runs, I will then check the fuel hose and see if I can stop the fuel with my fingers, I believe that I should not be able to stop it. It should have enough pressure to keep me from pinching off the supply, is this a correct assumption?

Thanks.

nope, it is ignition related if the tach is dropping out, not just the trailing coils if the cars is stalling out so i would guess it is related to the whole ignition system.

i had a similar case with a customers car where the aftermarket cone air filter was resting on the wiring for the emissions relay behind the RF headlight and wore through some of the wires and was grounding them out, eventually it started popping the EGI and computer fuses.

just something to check, also go over all the wiring to see if it doesn't look like it's chafing anywhere causing a ground-out issue.
