Engine Check Light
I have an '89 N/A which has low mileage and runs well. Everything is stock. Recently, I noticed the engine check light comes on when I release the gas pedal to downshift or go downhill. In addition I get what feels like a "hiccup" from the engine and a popping sound until I add gas again, where my light goes off and the engine runs smooth again.
I have also noticed if I hold my rpm at about 2700-2900 rpm the engine will do the same thing where it runs roughly and my exhaust releases a popping sound.
What could my problem be?

if you search for the shop manual, its very very simple to run the diagnostic and find out what the code is

I looked up the procedures and they say that the Engine check light needs to be on when you start the car and run it..i tried the procedures anyway and didnt get a code. The engine check light is only on during deceleration while driving the car around

Anyone got an idea? You cant check the code because my gas pedal controls the light on deceleration when I drive. could it be some kind of sensor?
