Engine in, car starts..but- NEED HELP

Well, we finally got the motor in. After about an hour of cranking her over and spraying started fluid, we got her to start up for a couple of seconds, but had to pump gas to keep it going. The problem is...without the ignition on my oil pressure is ALL the way up the guage, but when we turn on the ignition, the pressure starts to drop. We only let the pressure drop to about 30 and then turned it off for fear that we have no oil pressure. But the oil is going through the filter for sure. Maybe it is just the guage? Is the an oil pressure sensor somewhere or something?

you don't have pressure while the engine ain't spinning. It doesn't matter what happens when you turn the key off. Your pressure isn't climbing when the engine is off. Sounds like you need to check that the wire is properly attached to the sending unit and that the connector is clean.

There is a pressure sending unit? Where is it? And how can I know if there is pressure?

Ok, the sending unit is that little gold guy that sticks out on the drivers side, right? How can I make sure I have pressure?
