Emissions broke my Tranmissions lol

so long story short.. took my 7 in to get emissions done and they broke the shift linkage and fork so that the fork is stuck in reverse but the shifter is in neutral.

i have 2 options and little money at this time so my question is should i either

a. buy a t2 transmission (etimated cost of part 300 bucks plus maybe 150 shipping so around 500 bucks)

b. attempt to repair current transmission

i plan on doing the jdm t2 swap in a few months so i figure getting the transmission would be a good step towards that plus it would be better than the n/a one to begin with.

anyone have any advice? do i have to remove the engine to get to the transmission?

yea im working on that but its not looking good, and i may have to take them to civil court or some bullshit im in the middle of dealing with all the bullshit around this --

so i don't want my car to be down for that long i need it running!

so anyway which option sounds good.. will a t2 tranny work with an n/a engine for a while? i think that may be cheaper than repairing my n/a one because i don't really want to even hang on to that one any longer

if you go for a tII tranny you'll need new pumpkin, drive shaft, and pressure plate (Not sure on that last one though).

If they were just doing emissions how did they break the fork? Emissions has nothing to do with the fork.... unless they broke it while having it on the roller piece? I just don't see how they could have broken it. What's the rest of the story?

ok story goes...

i drove car into them first time and they sent me out because my brake light was on so i go get brake fluid and come back...
1 hour later im back to front of line and i hand off car keys to some girl working there and go to the "penalty box" of the emissions place - then some dude sets off my car alarm and i have to go show him how to turn it off (he kept taking key out letting the alarm get armed then trying to start it and roll it forward and kept setting alarm off - anyway when it was my turn and the finnaly pull my car up to the rollers --- thats where something happens, the car was running he started to do something reving the engine, but i noticed my wheels werent spinning,
i see him killing my car multiple times and he calls me out

"uh.. how do you get your car in gear? - tells me to try it" im like what the ****! man i just gave you a working car now its stuck in reverse -- so i pop the clutch in and roll the car down to parking lot and get it towed-- had to fill out alot of paperwork talk to a manager what not now the ******* damage control place is being a pain in the *** as in not answering phone, not recieveing faxes i send blah blah

my best guess is that he had the car in reverse and sent the rollers forwards , maybe that could have done it.. it definantly had something to do with the rollers

Someone really screwed up...the etest doesn't require ever running in reverse.

Did you try removing the reverse switch and seeing if you can pop the syncro out with a screwdriver.

Personally, if the manager didn't say that they would fix it while you where on the spot. You need a lawyer because thier going to try every which way to get out of it. I would get a lawyer and go down to talk to them with the lawyer. Most places will want to settle there and then if you actually take a lawyer with you. Once they see your actually going to do it, they give in lol.

Had to do it with a car I baught once, it kept breaking and they wouldn't give my money back (lemon law). Braught my lawyer down and they settled there. I ended up paying the lawyer nothing because it didn't goto court but some will charge ya.

Who came up with the $ amount and does that cover the repair and expenses -after all, you did get towed, right?

Try this first. Is a popular problem with early miata trans. I personally has a trans that does this everything i shift from first to reverse. check this out http://www.miata.net/garage/stuckreverse.html

edit: to remove the trany, ? my Fb hade a broken trany, i keeped the engine in and pulled out the trany, most cars you can keep the engine in and pull the trany off u might need to support the engine on some cars tho. not sure if you need to on a second gen, but first gen was done with out engine support.

I had the same problem happen last night. Car is stuck in reverse, only first and second gear are accessible, and the reverse lights stay on. I was sitting in a parking lot having a discussion that I didn't want to have with my soon to be ex-girlfriend on the phone. I was frustrated and anxious and unconciously shifting and playing with the shifter. When I hung up the phone and went to get out of there, the car would only operate in reverse. When the shifter is in nuetral, it would go in reverse. When I would put it in 1st, I could here the engine revving and just rubbing my clutch. Its like the tranny is in reverse and first at the same time... weird.

But I checked out that link that twistedriver posted, and it matches my symptoms perfectly. I'll try it out and post to let you guys know if it works. I was praying that I wouldn't have to take my tranny out and rebuild it to get it back in proper shifting order. I'll keep you posted.
