Electrical Problems

Hey, I recently went to check out a used 86 Rx7 with 160000 miles. The guy said the only problem with the car is that it occasionally missed after warming up, but started right up.

When we got there, we started the car, and sure enough it started fine. We let it run for a bit while the hood was open to make sure it looked fine under the hood. Eventually, we went to test drive it, popped it into first gear, moved about 5 feet, and the car died. Tried to restart, but every time the power would be drained, and it wouldn't turn over. The car has a brand new battery, and the alternator has been test, and was fine. After we pushed the car back to the curb, there was power steering fluid on the ground, where the car had gone dead.

Any suggestions on what would cause this? Are the problems related in anyway? I would really like to get the car, but don't want to if it is more trouble then it is worth. Thanks.

There are three different idle control solenoids on the car. One is cold/fast idle, one is like a boost for when you turn on A/C or hit brake, or turn stering wheel. The last of the three I actually had a personal problem with. It was the BAC, constant idle solenoid. I had a small crack in a vaccum line and it cause a horible idle. Keep in mind that if you have the tiniest leak your car will idle like crap.

The missing sounds more like the Throttle possition sensor or old spugs/wires. The TPS (throttle sensor) can be adjusted simply with 2 light bulbs, you can find directions on www.teamfcs3.org, along with other cool stuff!

Losing P/S fluid??? Dont quote me but most of our cars DO NO have power stearing, but yours might. Sounds like you may need a new rack, could be expensive since its an RX7, w/ power assist.

I would say that if the engine runs without heavily misfiring, and has good compression, who cares what the electronics are like as long as you put in the BS time to resolder everything, and I mean EVERYTHING.

Keep in mind that I just paid $1500 for a 1987 TII, 141k original engine and everything. My car needs another 150 hours of TLC to be my baby!
