Electrical problem with 87 TII

I seem to have an electrical problem with my 87 TurboII. First thing is it only happens at night. What happens is all the lights go dim, then the hatch and door lights on the idiot gauge come on. Then the car won't rev and the car constantly backfires (like there isn't enough spark for the fuel). If I jump the car then the problem goes away and like I said before it never happens during the day. I also have a new alternator.

Any clues on what the problem could be? We think it might be the voltage regulator.

Well I'm thinking it might be a short somewhere also. Because I went to start my car earlier tonight and it didn't start. Found out I blew the main fuse. I'll have to go hunting for it when I get the chance.

I recently had a similar problem..It could either be a short or your alternator could be bad. I'd suggest having your alternator tested (should be 12 or so volts when your car isn't on and at least +1 to that when it's on). Also check all your groundings and make sure they are squeaky clean..

More than likely a bad alt

Also possibly connections to the alt or underhood fuse box. Also (but probably not) bad grounds to the engine/body/battery.
