electrical power problem

problem is, my sunroof, power windows, and lights on the logicon don't work sometimes. at first, my passenger power windows were fine (switches are good still), but now it doesn work. (driver's side is fine). and after switching my sunroof 3 times, it started to work, but after a few weeks, it had died. is it a ground problem? if so, where in the engine bay would i check? thanks.

I wouldn't think all of the above mentioned would have the same ground. Hold on a bit & I'll go get the schismos out of my car and see if I can come up with something...

All righty,

Sunroof is fed by the 15A sunroof fuse, and the ground is attached directly to the chassis structure near the motor. Check the switch for clean contacts would be my first suggestion...

Power windows are fed by a 30A fuse, don't know exactly where they ground because I never printed that schematic (not on my car)...

That help any?

If you keep blowing fuses, you need to find the problem before putting new ones in there.

If it's the sunroof fuse that's blowing, at least it's a simple circuit...

Does it blow only when actuating the sunroof? If so, that narrows it down to the wiring past the switch but before the motor, the relay #2 (diodes in there that could have shorted), or the motor itself. If it takes a couple of seconds for it to blow after the switch is actuated, look at the motor first...A tired motor will draw excess current...

well, after i put on the replacement fuse, i tried it and i just heard the motor moving up the sunroof. it stopped after that then i closed it. i tried again and it never worked. i know for a fact that the motor is still good because i got it from my friend's car (which had good electric parts).

so how bout the power windows? do i need a new 30a fuse? but my window goes down fine... just can't control the passengers anymore.

oh yeah i just realized that i had an electrical problem when i got the car. i remember that i had a short, which caused all my 3 batteries to die. i remember removing the room fuse and i unplugged the lights on the bin cabinets cuz it was causing the short. so what should i do? i have an 86 gxl if thats any helpful.

If one window is working and the other isn't, suspect the switch...

Don't assume any part from another car is good, or at least don't count it entirely out while troubleshooting. Talking about the sunroof motor here...

Now on the short you had, was it the lights in the bins that were staying on because of a bad door switch (and running the batteries down), or was it actually a short? It doesn't matter at this point, I guess...

Can you read a schematic? You're going to have to learn if you want to keep the car running a while, lol...

Sure, disconnect the theft computer to see if it helps. Ya never know

do you know where it's located? or is that an option for the gxl as well?

On my car, at least, it was behind the glove compartment. That sucker's been gone for a long, long time. Weight savings, you know

Got the FSM? In the back of the wiring manual, a couple of pages show locations for damn near everything...

Might be a pic of it in the Haynes too, don't know...

In any case, if you pull your glove box assy out of the dash, it's right there, can't miss it...
