electrical nightmare car!

my friends S4 TII died on him today.. it's actually an S4 GXL with turbo engine/electronics.

anyways, the EGI fuse blue (closest one to engine)- he replaced it with a larger one but that popped (instantly) as well. Exceeding his car knowledge at this point, he called me. we towed it to my garage, and I started digging.

it looks like the car has had a hackjob rewire. At least the fuel pump was rewired semi-properly, though it now runs whenever the key is on - engine on or not.

The ECU wiring, however.... wowie. About half the wires from the large connector (left side if looking at it mounted) end about 6" from the ECU and go nowhere. I checked the FSM and they would seem to be unimportant.

The wire that powers the ECU melted and melted several other wires along with it. I re-insulated the others and replaced the one that melted. However, the car still won't start. I took the ECU apart and found the (transistors, I believe) on one side of the CPU look like they've "leaked" onto the board, possibly casusing damage and/or are no longer functioning correctly. So I had a spare 88 TII ecu out of my 10ae, I plugged that in but still no start.

There are two largeish yellow connectors on the right side of the car, near the ECU but above it a bit. Neither one was connected to it's other part in the harness, I didn't attach them until I found out what they did, but I couldn't figure it out in the FSM. Hoping someone here can help me with that. Also, 2 wires connecting to one of the "plugs" on the car side, up in the fenderwell, both are "hot" and were snipped, they appear to go nowhere now as well. Should I reconnect these and plug the plugs together?

Thanks alot anyone that replies, I suck with eletrical so this is quite a learning experience for me. Wiring in a standalone is way easier than this nightmare! :P

You may be at the point where it would be cheaper/faster/easier to start over with a replacement harness & ECU.

It sounds like a turbo engine put in a non turbo car and someone used a JDM harness. The JDM harness being one made for a right hand drive car and a little difficult to install in a USA left hand drive car. A JDM harness being easily noted by the wiper wires/plug missing in action.

I wouldn't connect to the two plugs you mentioned that are up above the passengers feet.

I'd do as suggested above, get a NON TURBO EM harness and install it. Less time and work involved to make it work compared to a Turbo EM harness.

It's be pretty difficult to try to fix the wiring on that car by asking questioins online. I'm even having trouble with your description of the LARGE plug being on the left side???? I'm pretty sure you mean right side. Not a biggy but makes one wonder a bit.

Just out of curiosity, the two wires snipped. Can you tell what the colors are???? LIke brown with a red stripe or maybe brown with a black stripe or maybe just a pure black wire?

About half the wires stopping before the ECU. You mean the plug is cut off??? or some wires are cut off the plug??

Sounds like this is almost a Salvage vehicle. humor

The two plugs that don't go to the ECU are called X-15 and X-16. The folowing jpgs might help. Might not.

, I think I have what the wires do in life right, but I am prone to making mistakes. Oh well. I mostly made those pinouts for ME and not anybody else. The work for ME.

the two wires I *believe* are both on the same side of the one plug, and they were both black/red, but I will check today and gather photo evidance.

the wiper harness is MIA, so yeah, this must be a JDM harness.

The wires that come out of the one plug on the ECU (the largest one, and I thought it was on the left side when FACING the ECU mounted in the car), about half the wires coming out of that plug were CUT 6" from the end of the ECU and now go nowhere.

I don't have access to an S4 n/a harness, but I can get ahold of an S4 TII harness I think. (I should have one around here somewhere, haven't seen it in a long time though)

I think I'm making a mistake. I see series four car written, BUT......What is the number on the ECU???? N332, N333, N??????????

The reason is I'm suspecting this is a series five ECU. On a series four, looking fwd, the small plug is to your left, the middle plug is a bit larger and the plug to the far right is the larges i.e. most sockets.

,,,, Looking fwd you'll see the small plug with the 3's in it is on the far left, then the plug with the 2's then the plug with the 1's to the far right. Like far right towards the passengers door.

That's series four. Anything different is series five most likely.

But even if it's a series five ECU, there are not that many wires that really matter to get the engine running. Then again (ying and yang of it) on a series five the electric OMP has to be functional or the car will go in Limp mode at higher rpms. Not idle though, just driving will cause limp mode IF I understand how it works. Don't own one myself.

the ECU is N332.

I thinK I had my right and left backwards. Sorry about that

I'm going to pull the harness from the car and make sure /everything/ on it is perfect, I thought I had fixed everything but the car refuses to start. It doesn't have spark, may not have fuel either but I'm not sure.
