electrical help for a newb

well ive posted a few times about my car...basically the motor went on me...my guess it was one of those odd times when an apex can go on shut down or start up....neways ive jus been takin my time with it cuz im still savin for the rebuild parts i need....

-basically right now when i have the key in the ign. my battery drains pretty quickly... i mean the car wont turn over anymore (it used to even with the blown motor)...so obviously there is no charge from the alternator

-shouldnt the battery at least be holding some voltage for more then a few min.?
maybe a ground problem?

another question i have is any quick tips i could get for things that are often overlooked when tearin the motor down to the block because im paranoid about having problems when i finally rebuild the motor and put it back in wouldnt wanna blow another one u kno

thanks alot
-will

Dang dude, if the car's just sitting there and all you're doing is cranking her, how do you expect the alt to recharge the battery? But, just in case:

If you think the battery's discharging when it's not supposed to, pull ALL of the fuses in the main block in the engine compartment. Get your trusty multimeter, pull the pos batt terminal off, and read for an amp draw between the battery pos post and the pos terminal, using the meter in series with the circuit.

If you don't understand me thus far, don't bother doing this...

If you do understand, we'll go on...You shouldn't have any current draw at all with all of the main fuses out. If you do, it's a wiring problem before the fuse box (this is very rare)...

One by one, reinsert the fuses, doing the main fuse LAST, checking for current draw over 100 milli-amps or so with each fuse...If any fuse (except the main) displays a noticeable current draw, that's your problem circuit...

Once the main fuse goes back in, you'll probably see a draw. This is normal, within certain limits. If it's beyond about 100 milli-amps, you're going to have to pull all of the fuses in the cabin fuse box now, and reinsert them in the same manner, checking for the abnormal draw on a particular circuit. At that point, if you find a questionable fuse/ circuit, it'll be time to whip out the schematics

BTW, a ground problem won't cause a battery drain (we're talking normal ground wiring here)...

wow i must really sound like a dumbass when i post on this forum...yea i kno if im cranking the motor it will drain the battery...thats not what i was doin tho i jus had the key in the ign. and waited for a couple minutes (without cranking) and my battery would drain

and yea i kno what ur sayin ill try it tomorrow thanks man that makes sense instead of havin to go thru checkin individual things at least source the prb a little...what sux is i was goin through testing things today and my multimeter died while i was testing the CAS out of curiosity i think the ****** fuse went in my meter too wtf...i have the worst luck 7 aint my lucky # but ima stick with it

If you happened to have voltage on the circuit and were trying to read resistance, that'll blow the fuse. No big deal, happens to all of us every now & then...

The fuse is just there as a power source for the resistance scales, the voltmeter and ammeter scales should still work...

So the key is just sitting there in the ignition switch and the battery's draining? Key's not turned to ACC or ON?

Looking at the voltage at the batt terminals can tell you the state of charge ... fully charged, kinda charged, discharged ... looks like yours is fully discharged. You could also connect a battery charger which can tell you the same thing.

why is it discharged ?
- a drain somewhere (then follow wayne's method)
- alt is no good (or alt is not wired properly)

and please remember that a battery that has been fully discharged 2-3 times can be considered garbage, and might damage the alt.

i had the key turned to acc cuz i was pullin codes off of it (its an s5)...i wanted to see if the ecu was functioning properly, since i removed the intake system i figured it would read out the codes for the sensors and the BAC, which it did... as i was pullin the codes tho the battery was draining and the idiot lights faded after like 2 minutes...i mean the car has been sittin for a while and i jumped the battery(brand new battery too) and charged it to see if it would hold power...but once i disconnected the cables it jus drains and drains

im jus askin to be sure about things cuz my car only has 80,000 original miles and the motor jus went on me which freaks me out...i want to have no type of electrical problems when i put a fresh rebuilt motor back in because, from what i read, even electrical problems which i guess could possibly lead to misfire, could destroy these motors...

im perplexed as to how my motor died it gave no warning whatsoever

also any tips u guys could give me while im tearin the motor down that sometimes get overlooked

alot of stuff gets talked about in here but anything you guys could think of thats simple that people usually neglect or dont talk about here i would appreciate

thanks again
