electrical gremlins!

hey guys!
any1 ever had this problem?my car has been stting for a while, and i'm getting her back into shape.
i was having a bunch of weird problems, and ended up tracing it to the 12+ wire going to the ignitin switch.
with good voltage at the battery, was only getting around 8.5 volts at the switch-i cleaned all the connections at the batterie,no change.
i ended up jumping a temporary 10gauge wire directly from the battery,so i could keep working on my MT install.
i'm tempted to just run a new wire to the switch, with a 40 amp inline fuse or something like this, and call it good.
wha do ya all think?how could i be loosing 4 volts somewhere-seems like a good amunt of resistance somewhere...
