Electric fans swap

I've seen some pics. of second gens. with two electric fans on the radiator, replacing the belt driven fan.

Anybody knows EXACTLY what kind, brand, etc of fans are those and where can I get them from? Is going for electric fans a good idea, is cooling actually improved? Obviously there's a hp gain.

I think the dual fan setup is the Fiero fan mod.

There are literally HUNDREDS of threads in this section debating the merits of E-Fans.

There will be a parasitic loss from your engine removed but the cooling is debated.

It depends on the way you do it. To actually improve cooling you will need a fan with a very high CFM rate and a fan shroud. Then get a temperature switch to turn the fan only when needed.

It might become a restriction once you reach around 60MPH where the air forces through instead of using the fan to pull.

Some people use Fiero electric fans since they almost drop right in. I used an Imperial 16 inch fan from Checker and I will try to keep everyone away from them! It cooled half as good as my stock fan did. When summer came I had to switch back the engine based fan.

The one major plus of having a E-fan is that there is a huge amount of room made by removing the stock shroud.

The Fiero uses a single fan.

That's why you buy a quality thermoswitch that will turn the fan off at a certain temp and allow it to freewheel. Unless you're referring to how close the e-fan and shroud usually are to the radiator and that being a restriction to airflow?

To the original poster, do a search for e-fan, electric fan, and member name NZconvertible. You'll find a diagram of the proper way to wire it in.

And I think some of the Taurus or Escort fans are dual speed. I don't think I've seen too many dual fans in use on FCs.

Nope, not the Taurus fan, Im using one from a 3.8 Taurus (Shroud fits over my Koyo radiator perfectly ) and its a single fan. I know some 2nd gen Probe GTs (not sure about 4cyl models) used a dual fan setup.

It's hard to find a double temp switch which would turn off at high speeds and turn on at cold/hot temps.

I mainly meant that the Efans are usually places close to the rad and creates an obstruction for natural airflow.

Don't use dual electric fans on an FC. The radiator is nearly square in shape, so one big fan covers more surface area and pulls more air than two fans small enough to both fit on the core.
