Anyone switch to all season tires in the winter?
I just purchased new Continental ContiExtreme Contact tires for the winter weather. Anyone use these tires? Or does anyone here switch to all season tires in the winter period? From what i have read (Haven't got them yet) a little less traction on dry roads, but much improved traction on wet roads and snow. I know the last set of 'summer' tires I used in the winter I was all over the road... not doing that again.
Interesting test results article here also;

I just got some of Michelin's new tires for my 'vert, the Michelin HydroEdge. They are an all-weather tire, but they look pretty impressive - and with an 80,000 mile warranty I know I will be able to drive them hard.
So far my impressions of these are as follows: 1)Good dry traction. 2)No tire sqealing at the limit. 3)Better dry grip than my previous tires. 4)For the first 600 miles they had a weird noise from 40-55mph, but that is gone now. 5)Overall a quiet tire. 6)Very good wet traction. 7)80K mile warranty. 8)~$130 a piece, so pretty good deal for 80K miles and good driveability.

If it gets to bad I drive a different car. I do have a set of Blizzak studless snow tires, but I choose to not risk the 7 if weather is really bad, so I haven't put them on in years.

all-season tires = tEh suck. They can do everything, but they can't do anything well.
I have two sets of rims, one for winter and one for summer. I have Michelin Artic Alpin snow tires on my stock GXL 15" rims, and I have a set of Falken Azenis on my Turbo II 16" rims for summer.
If you're going to get two sets of tires, you're throwing money away by getting all-seasons. Just get snow/ice tires for the winter, not only are they less expensive per tire (I paid $70/each for my snows), but they are FAR better in snow/ice/rain than ANY all-season.

I don't get any snow here, just rain. I have 2 sets of tires and 2 sets of rims .. I will see how much better these perform once we start to get some hard rain. I have a couple other cars myself .. but it sucks to not drive the 7 just cause of some rain ... so I am hoping to pull it out this winter.

well, there are some summer tires that are good in the rain. Get some of those. If you get no snow, and it rarely (maybe never) drops below 45 degrees, then don't even bother.
From what I've experienced, all-seasons usually aren't good in rain. Get Aquatreads, even, if it's unusually rainy in the winter.

I used snow tires on my Galant VR4... and wow... holy rally car grip in the snow batman. That was one damn fun car in snow. Mega Traction, and drifting around snowy corners in control was great. They are well worth the money and cheaper than all seasons. The only reason I have all seasons on my **** box winter cavalier mentioned above is they came with the car and they have plenty of tread left, and Im spending no money on that car other than gas and an oil change every so often.

My car came with some Federal something or anothers. I really have no idea what they are. Looks like the owner before me just bought the cheapest tires at Costco before he sold it.
I ran them on the Spokane Raceway Park track for a BMW school back in March. They actually did an awesome job. Same tires I ran in snow that winter, take drives to Spokane in, and competed in a couple autocrosses.
Has anyone actually ever heard of Federal tire maker?
Since I only drive my RX-7 like once a week I will probably get some street slicks or Falken Azenis on them.
