Electric Fan replacement advice please

Hello,

I want to replace my fan clutch on my 87 GXL with an electric fan. I was wondering what dimensions of fan I should pursue.

I have a lead on an electric fan from a friend:

It is made by Flexalite.
This is a 16 inch diameter fan. The shroud is 17 high x 16 1/2 wide. The fan moves 2800 cfm of air.

It does not have a thermostat so I would need to purchase that. Is this fan too big? Is it something that would work?

Thanks,

Scott

That fan should fit just about perfectly. With a thermostat there is no reason it should not perform well. I had a 15" fan from a Barretta on my 89 NA with a thermostat and it never had any problems.

If there is nothing wrong with the stock clutch fan, I would strongly advise not removing it. There is no power to be gained by going with an E-fan, and it can cause problems (too much current draw for the stock alt, etc..) Im not saying that it cant be done or is a bad idea all the time, but changing over to a E-fan for no reason at all just isnt worthwhile. Yes it will work, and if you are dead set on doing it, have it wired up through a thermoswitch. You can usually get E-fan "kits" at most auto parts stores.

Hmm,

I had an electric on my 82 GSL and it make quite a difference with throttle response and it sounded alot better as well. I can't stand the HOWL of the fan clutch. Most of the time I can barely hear the engine. Curious how others feel about this change\upgrade.

I obviously don't want to ruin anything or cause any problems down the road, but I can't help but think that I will at least gain some throttle response, and it will sound alot better as well.

If the stock fan clutch is working properly, then don't replace it. The FC electrical system is stressed enough, and adding the 30+A a fan draws (about 15 continuously on average) is a big deal...Also, the stock fan only drags on the engine when it needs to...oddly enough, this is exactly what an e-fan would do....

Really, unless your fan clutch is dead, it's not worth it.

And that Flexalite fan you are referring to ROARS. Can't have a conversation in the car while it's on.

Gentlemen,

As usual, great feedback....I really appreciate it. It sounds like even me getting great deal on the electric fan won't be worth the trouble.

Thanks to all who have responded.
