Electric Fan

I was wondering if anybody has installed an electirc fan on their RX-7 and had overheating problems. I was thinking about getting one, but if they don't cool as well and won't mess with it. I was also wondering if they help horsepower?

Not so much horsepower (maybe 1HP @ the flywheel) but torque responce is improved and the engine bay is less cluttered.

My GXL liked to run a little warmer, but I put the shroud on and that cleared it up. The T2 ran very cool with a fan and no shroud though. I like the room it cleared up. However I had several problems with the thermostats a few times.

I had e-fans on my 87 N/A. With a better then stock radiator, it seemed to stay cool. I wouldnt do it to my TII till I get my K2 radiator.

My fan was inside the shround and pulled air towards the motor (of course)..

If you can get a Fiero fan, go for It. I hear people doing well with that set up.

Personally, the stock fan Is VERY sufficient. I'd stick with stock, unless you like the voided engine bay look.

I know of 2 FC owners that have wasted their motors with an aftermarket electric fan. Fan died and so did the motor.

I wouldn't run a Perma-Cool (finger chopper!) or any other unshrouded fan... and I would look for a fan that's over 2500 CFM.

I have a perma-cool on my car, and it WILL get hot in traffic with the AC on. I've got a stock Fiero e-fan that I am going to try out- BDC is running one on his 425 RWHP beast with no problems.

I just put in a brand new rebuild in my 86 RX7 and I have a 16 inch e-fan and for some reason my motor continues to overheat. I'm thinking about putting my stock fan and clutch back in. Does anyone know how to tell if the fan clutch is bad?

The fan is only there to assist with airflow at low speed or when stopped. If it overheats in heavy traffic, when stopping at the lights or when idling for a while, but no other time, the fan is the likely suspect. If it overheats at speed or under load, it's not the fan.

When the engine's cold the fan will basically freewheel. If you leave the engine idling for a while then shut it odd the fan should have a lot more resistance.

I'm also running the 16" perm-a-chopper unshrouded 2950cfm electric and have no problems.

The fan is only functional at slower speeds. The front of the car's grill area will flow far more air than ANY fan you can fit under the hood. What you need to determine is whether or not the cooling system is functioning properly. If the car overheats at speed, or scooting around town.

My car is running a wee bit warm right now because my coolant is probably 90/10 antifreeze/water. (doesn't transfer heat for ****) I'm waiting till I can get my car inside to change out a bad waterpump housing (stripped pump bolt) and then I'll get the mix right. Its not getting HOT per se, but its warmer now in the dead of winter than it was running in 90 degree summer temps. (had it the other way around 10/90 mostly water this summer)

Hope this helps.
