Electric engine hoist

I bought a 1 ton cherry picker from harbor freight awhile back and when i pulled the engine out of my GTU, it wasnt long enough to pull the engine, the cherry picker was being pulled into the front bumper and smashing it in cause the engine is set so far back. I had to bring the picker in from the side of the car to get it out. So im thinking about buying a electric hoist from harbor freight and strapping it to the ceiling in my garage. Would be very handy to have a setup like that, just pull the engine up and push the car back. Anyone ever done this? If so, id like to see your setup. Thanks.

I have the same engine hoist, and have used it successfully several times. You go in from the side, lift it all the way up, then kinda pull it back. I left the tranny on, so I had to have a friend kinda hold up the tranny end while I pulled it away, but it worked fine for as little as I do it.

As for the electric hoist, its doable, but be very careful. Whatever you attach it to needs to be able to support 400+ pounds. Also, I think it would be a pain in the *** to lift the engine then have to move the whole car, especially since you will have to have the car jacked up to get the bolts off.
