On a series four 1987 na car, the exaust manifold will have a hole in it just below the rear exaust port, and there will be a pipe inside the manifold that goes into the exaust about a inch or two.
Anyway, that hole in the exaust manifold mates with a hole on the rotor housing in the same place i.e. below the rear exaust hole in the rotor housing. THAT is the passage for the exaust gas to go into the rotor housing. Then it turns right and goes into the intermediate housiing and then up the intermediate housing to the large hole in the top of the intermediate housing where the EGR valve sits.
You should be able to easily blow into that hole at the exaust port and have air exit the top of the intermendiate housing.
IF not, its clogged or a WORST CASE SCENARIO, someone has a front rotor housing where the rear housing is. There is a *stamp* with F or R on each rotor housing. The stamp is on top and to the left of centerline of the housing. IF you have a F on your rear rotor housing.........not desirable.
Oh, and as the man mentioned several posts above, make sure the GASKET that has that half inch hole has not been installed backwards. If so, then there would be no passage for exaust gas from the exaust manifold to the rotor housing etc.
You can see, I like to scare people.

So I could not get that damn heat sheidl off the manifold. I could get the bottom off and prolly out of the way, but I could not find the upper bolts. I think I am going try getting it tested again after checking 5th gear unless you all can convince me its easy to take off! haha

all done
Hey guys, just wanted to let you know its all done now. It turned out the EGR was pulling enough I guess. They did not do a driving test so no worries about why it only works well in 5th gear.
