ECU and Turbo question

Hi i got a second hand standard ecu.. its got an RE amemiya sticker on it and says "for race purpose only". Also has a REDOM sticker. Im guessing its chipped. Is it ok to run this ecu on a stock turbo S5??

Also i was wondering how freely the standard S5 turbo should spin when spun by hand.??
Mine doesnt exactly spin "freely".

any answers appreciated thanks.

The chipped ECU's are normally mapped for certain mods to the basic JDM spec car - such as exhaust, intake, possibly a larger turbo. They usually have fuel mapping for higher boost than stock, along with rev limit removed, speed limit cut removed, fuel cut removed.

There may be some notes or details on what the ECU is mapped for on a sticker on it - but it may be in Japanese

Chipped ECU's will also be mapped for Japanese Fuel - so 100 RON - they will work on 99 RON with no issues.

As for your Turbo - it should spin very freely - if it doesn't the bearings or shaft are shot and it will need the centre section replacing (CHRA), but it would be cheaper to source another good used unit.

So if i was to spin the turbo with my finger, it should rotate several times?? My car hits boost decently but this is my first FC so im not sure how it should be.

Also, is a tune a definite requirement if i was to use the ecu?

thanks guys

There shouldn't be much if any resistance to turning the compressor blades.

As for tuning - you can't really tune these ECU's. They are designed to take advantage of mild mods that are done - e.g. Exhaust and Intake - which will normally result in the stock turbo making a lot more boost than the 5.5 psi spring pressure on the stock wastegate. As a result, the stock boost solenoid doesn't really do anything anymore, and the stock ecu chip would just be cutting fuel to the rear rotor when you hit 8.8 psi.

The chipped ECU will remove the rear rotor fuel cut (same as an FCD) but unlike the FCD, it will map more fuel for the higher boost values. For the most part, the ECU will have the same mapping as the standard ECU, so general driveability is not affected. In other words, if you put a chipped ECU into a totally stock car, it will do nothing different.
