test to see if it is shorted and holding injectors open....car runs but it is hard to start...is there a possibility that this can happen?

Hard to start cold.......water thermo sensor disconnected probablility.

Hard to start hot.......low compression problem, not water thermosensor related.

Check the ECU out by going to the Control Unit page of the Fuel and Emissions section and looking at each pin of the ECU and comparing it with the results on the Control Unit page.

If the injectors were being held open, the thing would not start and fuel would run out the exhaust.
