easiest way to install trans (engine already in)

what is the easiest way to put my transmission back in? we took it out to fix it and now that we need to put it back in, we are trying to figure out the easiest way to get it back in... the engine is mounted.

jack up the car. put the tranny on a floor jack. lift and connect. there is no other way about it if you are doing it yourself. If you can get the car on a lift, that would be ideal.

another crude (yet effective) method is to set the tranny on your stomach and lift it into place, while an assistant screws it in... the car has to be up high enough, and you'll probably end up doing it anyway, even if you use a jack.... at least we did, it was just quicker.

Yep, it only weighs about 70 pounds, just grab it, shove, kick, and scream...it'll pop in sooner or later (always later with me)!

This is the way I've done it. It has to be lined up just right. If you have problems try tilting the engine back some. That will give you a little more room to work with.

Like MPM said.
I wedged a wood stick from the rad support to the PS bracket to tilt the engine back on the mounts.

Yeah just bench press the bitch-Just make sure you have someone there to help you incase it doesnt go right in- It can get tirring holding it up there for 5 or 6 minutes and you dont want to drop it on yourself.

so we have to bench press it? we had it up on a jack and we just couldnt get it lined up right to fit it in the splines... so we should just benchpress it to get it into the splines? we have 3 people.

Sometimes turning the flywheel just a bit between stab attempts helps....

I did a clutch on my n/a last summer, have someone tilt the front of the engine up so the rear goes down and bench the trans into place, once the splines line up put in the trans mount bolts on the tail shaft to hold it enough to get the trany to engine bolts in, took me about 30 min with 3 people to install the trany

When trying to line it up, keep an eye on the front of the trans to be certain it's going in straight, eg. Equal distance from housing to motor. I, like some above, needed to tilt the rear if the engine down. Without doing that, I wasn't able to install the trans. Used a jack to get it up, then my son tilted it as I watched the front to be sure it was going in correctly.

ok we got it in. we just had one person laying on each side of the car bench pressing the trans and rotating it, etc. and it just slid in. we also had one person ontop to make sure everything was going in straight.

now which angle is the easiest to get those bellhousing bolts that are on the TOP??? they definitely arent easy to get to.

For the top middle, use a box end wrench. For the the sides, use 2-3 ratchet extensions with a u-joint socket in there some where and do them from the bottom. It's really pretty easy this way actually.

Haha. MAKE SURE you do not start wrenching on the tranny with the starter ground wedged in between the motor and the transmission. Neevosh and I did this on my car and spent roughly an hour trying to get it out without disconnecting the tranny and having to realign it(against my wishes). If it does happen, just disconnect the MF'er and start over. It only took 5 minutes. NEXT TIME we know who to listen to, right Mike??

If you have a top mount, removing it makes a lot more room to get to the top bolts.
