e85 vs. denatured ethanol for emissions- any significant difference?

just wondering if e85 can be substituted for denatured ethanol from home depot? I don't see any reason why not, but I thought I'd ask before i do it. it would be a hell of a lot cheaper, as a gallon of denatured ethanol is about 10 bucks last time i bought any.

should be OK. Ethanol is mixed with methanol to form denatured alcohol. Both burn fine and very clean.

you may want to thoroughly check your fuel system beforehand if you plan on running some E85, even just for emissions. It will eat up various seals and stuff in your fuel system, and i dont think a raging engine fire will pass emissions

Yeah, e85 eats up rubber from what i have heard. All of the flex fuel vehicles come with stainless stell lines for that very reason.

E-85 is 85% denatured (or ethanol). So if you are making your own, then you are fine using straight gasoline and denatured from the Depot.

So what would I need to do to convert my 87 SE N/A to run on E85? How do I get it to run on ethanol? I'm willing to make the conversion if someone would tell me how to do it and where to find all the necessary parts.

I think Viton holds up to E85 just fine. Just would have to replace rubber with Viton hoses. And if your fuel pump has rubber seals, might need to replace those too, maybe just get a pump made to handle E85.

Viton's some nice stuff... holds up great.

Replace all the soft fuel lines and I'm guessing injector o-rings and a fuel computer. Not worth the work if your looking to save money on gas.

Are you sure it's not worth it? I mean it'll probably be less money. Anyways Can you give me an exact list of what I'd need to replace? I wanna see if i can do it.

Big injectors, lots of fuel pump, and a standalone would be the very, very, very short answer.

You guys seem to have drifted from the topic alittle. If he is just going to run it for emmisions, my guess is that he is going to use like 2 gals of the stuff. Then he will probably top it off with gas so i don't think he will have any more trouble then with the denatured alcohol trick.

Deffinatly let us know what happens, i need emmisions on one of my verts before i sell it.

It's just 85% alcohol, so ya e85 is almost exactly the same as adding pure alcohol. No it won't damage anything over such a short period of time. It's not like you're using it every day.

after 1985 most us cars utilize rubber in the fuel lines and o rings that allow for higher than normal ethanol use.

Golly gosh. I run 100% E-85 in one car and the other two cars I mix half and half.

The 100% car has 720cc injectors in lieu of the stock 550's' and still needs a touch of additional fuel (RTEK2.0 set on 550cc, NOT 720).

The other two cars, one 86 non turbo and one turbo with the half and half mixture, need more fuel also (RTEK 2.0), quite a bit more fuel.

Been doing this for close to a year. I change NOTHING at all in the way of fuel pumps/o'rings. Never will. Not needed.

I emissions tested the 86 with half and half and frankly speaking, did not have better results than the year before. Got me as to why not.

If you run with half and half and don't have a fuel controller of some sort, the cars gonna run too lean and run CRUMMY. Heck, if you run with ten gallons of gasoline and a couple of gallons of E-85........you'll notice it. Slightly crummy running. Too lean.
