Breaker bar with a pipe on the end of it. Put that on the pulley. Now turn the engine over manually until the breaker bar is pressing firmly against the frame. Now go in the car and kick the motor over for less than a second. Not the best method, but it works if you dont have an impact gun.

Impact gun.

Or you could try putting a breaker bar on, somehow blocking the flywheel and then beating the breaker bar with a sledge hammer. Its really not the force of an impact that gets the bolt loose, its the jolt of it.

When I did mine, I had to have a 200lb friend stand on the engine while I broke that bolt loose.

Oh yea, and I was also using Mazdatrix's flywheel stopper. Only $23... worth it.

I gotta agree, the Mazdatrix flywheel stopper is very nice.

****!

Did I say that...what I meant was....

Motor is out of the car.

Damn...Nice slip up/

500 ft/lb impact wrench did NOT budge the bolt. This motor was rebuilt by Rotary Performance in Dallas, and I dont know what they did, but this motor is now worthless to me...

Anyone want to trade an S5 streetported motor for a good S4?

I ended up going to home depot and getting about 4 feet of 2 inch lead pipe, and slipped it over the end of the ratchet. I had to stand on it to break it loose

It probably seems really tight because of the loctite

Or.....Craftsman 3/4 inch breakover bar and socket. Flywheel stopper in place. Twenty pound sledge hammer. Apply the metal end of the sledgehammer to the breakover bar in a firm manner. That method will take my flywheel nut off after a couple of firm hits. Not the wind up and let go type of hitting, but a good firm smack anyway.

Must be the locktite on the bolt threads that's doing you in.

ENGINE OUT OF THE MOTOR??? HEE,HEE, HEE , HEE , HEE, HEE HEE,HEE, HEE , HEEHEE,HEE, HEE , HEEHEE,HEE, HEE , HEEHEE,HEE, HEE , HEEHEE,HEE, HEE , HEEHEE,HEE, HEE , HEEHEE,HEE, HEE , HEE funny!

Maybe the application of a propane torch on the bolt for a bit will also help. You probably have it off by now.

impacts work really well, that's why impacts guns are so effective. Remember, kinetic energy is based mostly on speed, not weight.
To get my friend's flywheel off, we wedged an iron pipe behind the flywheel against the counterweight, put a 4 ft cheater bar on the end of a socket wrench, and put my 160lb *** on the end. We brok 3 wrenches that day, and they were craftsman!
For you, I recommend renting some ridiculously powered impact gun and letting her loose. That "500lb" impact wrench doesn't mean it actually puts out 500 ft/lbs, it's probably more like 150-200.

Well, the application of ALOT of heat (read aceteline torch..sp?) the bolt came off. The extreme heat ruined the needle and stuff... But its out.

The easiest way I have found to remove it is to take the oil pan, pickup tube and regulator off the bottom of the engine. Place the block on the floor, and use a small piece of chain to lock the flywheel in position (use the lifting hook and a clutch nolt). Put one foot on the block, and then step on and slightly bounce on a 24" or longer breaker bar. Comes loose in a few bounces.
